Why was Instagram created in the first place?

By the way, why is Instagram called Instagram?

Instagram almost didn't call itself Instagram. But its co-founders ended up choosing this name, which comes from the contraction of English terms.

Instagram reached one billion monthly users in the summer of 2018. But how many of them know where the strange name of the social network came from?

Instagram was born in October 2010, thanks to its creators Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. A year later, the app was named Apple's App of the Year. Then, in April 2012, it reached 100 million users, and was redeemed by Facebook.

The name Instagram comes from the English “Instant telegram” (literally, instant telegram), explained Kevin Systrom on Quora in 2011. This refers to the fact that we capture what we are doing on the moment on Instagram. The co-founder said he appreciated the fact that the term "sounds like 'camera'" when spoken orally. In another Quora post, he added that the suffix -gram was used in ancient Greek to mean that you write something, that you keep a record of it.

"WE WANTED SOMETHING SOMEWHAT UNIQUE"

“We wanted something pretty unique,” he writes of the Instagram name. We had a few names on our list, but there were always a lot of apps that had names that were too similar. He also said that someone who heard the name of the app could write it down without difficulty.

FROM BURBN TO INSTAGRAM

You should know that before being called Instagram, the app had another name: Burbn. This one came from Kevin Systrom's (below alongside Mike Krieger and Adam Mosseri, current Instagram CEO) passion for bourbon, a liquor.

Burbn was more of a geolocation application, which made it possible to find places to go out with friends, then to post the photos of his trips. But because it ended up looking a lot like the competitor Foursquare app - and it didn't work very well - Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger decided to evolve it. They then took a look at what Burbn users were doing the most. It was about sharing photos. This is how Instagram was born, where you can now also share videos.
