Test: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: The ultimate multiplayer game, a must-have!

While the Nintendo Switch was designed as a multi console, here is a flagship game of the genre pointing its nose. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch is presented as the ultimate version of the episode released on Wii U in 2014, and the least we can say is that the bet is successful!

The basic principle, we know it by heart: frenzied go-kart racing where we swing the worst filth hoping not to take a blue shell just in front of the finish line. In this, Mario Kart 8 is already a success, undoubtedly one of the best opus in the series. The good thing is that with this Deluxe version, it is all the content that is boosted with all the DLCs already included on the cake. Not sure it is missing, because with 48 circuits without counting the Mirror versions, we have more than enough in terms of diversity! We are staying in the same boat at the character level with 41 pilots, not counting the Miis. We also note the arrival of newcomers, King Boo and the Splatoon Inklings.

Among the new gameplay features, the possibility of storing two options at the same time as in Double Dash risks causing even more carnage on the track, clearly favoring reversals for even more fun. As often, the luck factor has a strong impact on the final result, but we expect no less from such a game. However, we note the arrival of a third level of mini-turbo on the skids, the purple, long to go out but terribly effective. Since we can play a bit on the corners to perform it more efficiently, this purple mini-turbo remains a bit more technical than the Fire Hopping (action of hopping after a mini-turbo to prolong its effect), the latter having was removed from the game, which is no worse considering that it brought nothing concrete.

For novice players, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is thinking of including a kind of automatic mode in which the car follows the road by itself, without leaving the track. Yes, on paper, it looks like pure cheating, but it must be said that this option is reserved for players who are not really used to video games and who want to have a little fun without having the impression of mowing the grass for 10 minutes, two laps behind the others. This mode prohibits the use of the purple mini turbo by the way.

Technical driving enthusiasts, for their part, will no doubt be happy to find the directly integrated 200cc mode, including in Time Trial. The impression of speed is really impressive and the improved braking makes the mode more accessible than before, even if it is reserved for experienced players. Anyway, we are surprised to see how the game is both fluid and beautiful, even at any boast! The decors are worked, the colors throw in and despite the huge number of elements on the screen, the title manages to always remain clear. 1080p, 60 fps with a close-up achievement, that's all we asked for and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe succeeds brilliantly!

But if all these small additions are already very welcome, it is the Battle mode that will have benefited from the most accomplished work. Five different game modes playable on eight special arenas, with the ability to customize the number of rounds, objects, types of vehicles allowed and many other things, there is plenty to do. The Battle of Balloons is always effective, the Battle of Pieces is more tactical, the Bob-Omb are a happy mess and the Capture the Sun mode allows you to vary the experience a little. The newcomer, Tracking the Trail, is just as funny as the other modes: six karts play the police and six karts play the thieves. When the latter are captured, they are put in a cage but the other thieves can try to free them. If they are all captured at the same time, the round ends, of course. A little game of cats and mice really fun to play even if it seems to lack a balancing hair, in favor of thieves currently. In spirit, it had been a long time since we had had a battle mode as pleasant and above all as complete, even if it would not have been too much to be able to fight battles under 12. Indeed , you can't choose the number of participants and the AI fills the holes, whatever happens.

To conclude, if in itself Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is already a must-have of the multi racing game, it also benefits from the specifics of the Switch, which can be played alone or with others in all possible configurations. Admittedly, for two on a small screen, it can sometimes be complicated, but having the choice remains an excellent point, without forgetting that it remains one of the rare games that allows two players together to play online from from the same console. On this subject, online offers the Battle mode and the Race mode while allowing to organize tournaments, very interesting for the community game.

Good points
One of the best episodes of the series, fun to perfection
Accessible to the whole family, in particular via the Driving Driving mode
Always technical, especially in 200cc mode
It's beautiful
It’s perfectly smooth, 60 fps
Ultra complete content, 48 circuits, 41 characters
Battle mode re-cut
Tracking mode on the Track is really good
Online gaming for two on the same console

Negative points
Some minor balance issues in the Battle mode
You cannot choose the number of opponents in Battle mode
The blue shell is still just as unfair

It's no surprise that this Mario Kart 8 Deluxe immediately registers as a must-have for the Nintendo Switch. With full content containing all the DLCs, a reworked battle mode and a few nice additions like the purple Mini-Turbo and the driving mode for neophytes, this opus is a success, from every angle. Perfectly suited to the hybrid and agile side of the Switch in the way of playing alone or with others, the Nintendo racing game has it all and you can throw yourself at it with your eyes closed!
