Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX game review: help is coming!

Do you know the dungeon crawlers? Otherwise, these are games that focus on exploring random dungeons to find items and eliminate a variety of enemies. Although the idea is enticing, this genre remains rather marginal today, even if some big names were associated with it. This is particularly the case of the Pokémon franchise with the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, which Nintendo is rolling out on Nintendo Switch with an interesting remake of the first two games!

Available on: Nintendo Switch

What if you were a Pokémon?
If you've never played a Mystery Dungeon Pokémon, all of them offer much the same story. You play as a human who, for some mysterious reason, crosses the barrier of the world of men and that of Pokémon. So you wake up one morning being one of these famous creatures and finally being able to understand what Pokémon mumble!

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, you will have to answer a series of questions about your personality. Then, the game will assign you a Pokémon that it thinks is suitable for what you are, although you will be able to change small creature if the automatic selection of the game does not suit you. Thereafter, you will need to choose a teammate before going on an adventure to rescue Pokémon. Yes, your mission will revolve around a small business that you and your ally will set up on feet to go and rescue Pokémon in distress in dungeons!

While the premise is simplistic, it's hard to resist the charm of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX. Both the Pokémon and the dialogues are extremely engaging, and you will see that you will sometimes have a different perspective on the behavior of certain creatures in the series. What's more, the story has its share of franchise-specific mysteries and elements, including legendary Pokémon found in special dungeons. So, even if the story is childish, the atmosphere of the game operates and you will undoubtedly hang on to the expeditions that you will lead!

Exploring dungeons at the heart of the experience
If you already played Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team or Red Rescue Team in 2005, know that Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX is essentially a redesign of these titles. Although some features and elements have been added, the basis of the game has not changed, so it is the same adventure focused on expeditions.

As such, the game is very clear: before each expedition, you must make sure you have the necessary supplies. Also, when you are in a dungeon, you will have to be careful not to run out of energy and vitality. What's more, as in any Pokemon game, your creature's movements are limited.

If you ever fail a mission, your game will not be over, but everything you have accumulated during your expedition will be destroyed. Although the game is permissive and it will clearly tell you how many stages of a dungeon you will have to cross in a mission, if you fail due to your lack of preparation, you will only be the one to blame!

Within the dungeons as such, you will move using boxes. As soon as you make a move, an enemy can also make one. The challenge is not only to take care of the health of your Pokémon, but also to anticipate the movements of an opponent in order to avoid being injured. Of course, traps will be set up on your way in certain places, to enhance the rather easy difficulty of the adventure.

In short, to play Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX is to accept quests, browse random dungeons, collect items and defeat enemies. The more you advance, the more you will unlock options deepening the experience, in particular by being able to venture into dungeons with no less than eight allies! When it comes to content, the game is full of missions to complete and items to find, so you can easily have them for a few dozen hours, especially with the interesting post-game content to discover. Besides, fans of Pokémon Shinys, know that they have been added to this redesign!

The DNA of the game: its greatest weakness
Unfortunately, where the pack has always hurt in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon franchise is the design of the dungeons. Even though we improved the games of 2005, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX still suffers from dungeons which, quite frankly, are not that fun to explore.

Earlier, I mentioned that dungeons are random. However, just because an environment changes every time does not mean it is so different from one time to the next. Very quickly, you will realize that a dungeon is similar to another, then another and yet another, the only big difference being the floor space and the layout of the walls. There’s just not enough diversity in dungeon design to make us feel like we’re really exploring different caves from one time to the next.

In addition, you will see that even if you collect experience and items to improve your team, you will end up getting bored fairly quickly during your explorations. The dungeon levels are empty, and what you find there is extremely repetitive. Sometimes there will be enemies or objects indicated on the minimap, but there is nothing that makes us want to really explore the dungeons. It's a shame since the game is not uninteresting, offering in particular new features compared to the original versions such as more Pokémon and mega evolutions. However, to get to these more attractive elements, one must inevitably go through a long purgatory of bland dungeons to explore.

Beautiful visuals and improvements that are welcome
I told you that the developers had included some new features compared to the original versions, thereby changing certain dimensions of the game. It's true, and quite frankly, these new features make the experience much more pleasant than it is. were Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team.

Visually, the game is simply magnificent. Using an artistic style never before seen in the Pokémon franchise, the game is presented to us in the form of a watercolor. The result gives access to splendid models of characters as well as environments bursting with bright colors. Honestly, I hope that this visual device will be reused in other games in the series, even for other franchises, as the result is convincing!

Otherwise, the developers have included automatic backup within dungeons as well as the ability to activate an automatic mode. At the press of a button, artificial intelligence will take control of your Pokémon and run through the dungeons for you, leaving you passive in front of your screen. It's interesting when you're bored with repeating dungeons, but it also shows how uninteresting exploring dungeons is.

Finally, to simplify the game even more, you no longer need to select an attack from a menu. Now you can just press the A button and the game will select your creature's most powerful attack. So you can very well get through the game by pressing only a very limited number of keys, although the automatic choices made by the game are not always the most effective.

Should you play it?
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is not a bad game, but the main flaw in games released in 2005 has not been fixed. And unfortunately, when you know that this flaw is present at the heart of basic mechanics, it is difficult to improve it without completely denaturing the product. That said, we could still have made exploring dungeons more interesting, in particular by diversifying them more and filling their empty levels a little more.

Even so, we cannot ignore the fact that the game can be addictive and that its content is interesting, especially when it comes to facing legendary Pokémon or trying to have Shinys. To discover, but not at any price!
