WhatsApp, Instagram: Mark Zuckerberg is adamant, Facebook will not give them up

Mark Zuckerberg will not sell WhatsApp and Instagram for the sake of a handful of US elected officials. The Facebook boss met Donald Trump on September 19 shortly after a private meeting with a US senator. The latter is concerned about the weight of Facebook and its hold on a significant amount of personal data, the management of which has been the subject of much criticism in recent years.

Facebook and Google are regularly indexed for the weight they represent on the Internet. A situation that worries a lot of people and in particular American elected officials. A senator also wants to dismantle the GAFA which she believes have become too powerful. During a meeting with another senator on Thursday, September 19, Mark Zuckerberg once again found himself in the position of an accused. Invited to sell WhatsApp and Instagram, the boss of Facebook has categorically refused.

WhatsApp and Instagram will not leave the fold of Facebook

“We had a frank conversation,” tweeted Senator Josh Hawley. "I challenged him to do two things to show that Facebook is serious about the issues of impartiality, privacy and competition," the senator added. The first request is to sell WhatsApp and Instagram. The second: agree to “submit to an independent, external audit on the issue of censorship,” explained John Hawley, who had already attacked Facebook on numerous occasions in the past, especially when he was Attorney General of Missouri.

Mark Zuckerberg obviously rejected both requests and it was not to be expected on the contrary, especially as Facebook continues to strengthen the ties between WhatsApp and Instagram. A common messaging between the three platforms is also being prepared, which does not go in the direction of calming the enthusiasm. Last July, US federal authorities imposed a record fine of $ 5 billion on Facebook, accused of deceiving its users. The company will also be forced to undergo independent monitoring of how it processes personal data.
