WarioWare Gold game Review - Worth Its Weight

WarioWare Gold game Review - Worth Its Weight

WarioWare Gold: The crazy return of the other mustachioed!

It's been 15 years since the WarioWare series has taken over our Nintendo consoles, with its crazy rhythm and wacky design. In 2018, five years after the almost Game & Wario episode, WarioWare Gold is back to basics.

The treasure thief is still making his own! Wario is organizing a tournament where cheating reigns, in order to get hold of everything that shines in Diamantville. In WarioWare Gold, we find all the iconic characters of the series like Ashley or Jimmy T, with one peculiarity: voice-acting! Indeed, for the first time, the scenes are dubbed (in French please) which necessarily develops the anime aspect. However, let's be honest, it’s very light when it comes to animation and the acting is quickly annoying, especially when it comes to the Wario belligerent.

FINGER OF FURY

WarioWare Gold: The crazy return of the other mustachioed!

The concept has not changed: it is a series of micro-games, each lasting less than five seconds (except "boss"), as quickly as possible. The gameplay revolves around three main variants which use either the buttons, or the gyroscope, or the touch. Protecting a cat from the rain, putting out a candle by directing its breath, finding animals camouflaged in the savannah, you must systematically understand the goal immediately and successfully pass the test. It sounds simple at first, but it gets complicated when the pace picks up, prompting us to resort to superhuman reflexes to avoid failure. It is this effect of repetition and constant acceleration that made the success of the series and there is no doubt that WarioWare Gold is riding the same wave thanks to a very effective artistic direction. Visually, the completely wacky and obsolete style maintains the general delirium of the work while the accelerated soundtrack perfectly supports the rhythm. An explosive mix spread over 300 micro-games, a large part of which comes directly from the old opus of the series.

CONTENTS AND VARIATIONS

WarioWare Gold: The crazy return of the other mustachioed!

In addition to the story mode with a fairly short lifespan, two hours to break everything, WarioWare Gold offers a lot of challenges. Chain micro-games endlessly, make the best scores, no longer have the indications of the type of tests before each micro-games ... if we have fun, we must admit that almost all the content revolves around tiny variations of the basic concept. In some cases, this is enough to find happiness, but you have now understood the principle. Note however that about fifteen mini-games, barely more advanced than micro-games, can be unlocked. Among the fun elements, we retain the possibility of redoing yourself the dubbing of most of the cinematic scenes of the title via the microphone of the 3DS, which can be very funny for those who have a minimum of imagination. Via a gacha that is paid for with the coins won in the game, you unlock all the elements, challenges and collectibles. It is also possible to play in pairs with a friend who also has a 3DS AND the cartridge, via an appropriate mode.

The notes
+ Positive points
The dingos micro-games
The hectic pace
The crazy style
Lots of little things to unlock
Reducing the cutscenes, it's funny

-Negative points
The slightly annoying French voices
The concept is struggling a little to evolve
Some micro-games lack clarity at first sight

WarioWare Gold condenses 300 micro-games, old and new, to break the series record. Thanks to an always effective and exhilarating concept, but also thanks to his crazy artistic direction, he does exactly what he is asked, and he does it well! If you hang on, you can have fun for hours, however note that the few variations supposed to feed the content are not the most pronounced, and that the weariness could sweep away the less persistent among you.
