Sonic Mania Plus: Sonic takes another lap and wins some new featuresA great tribute to the illustrious 2D episodes, Sonic Mania had managed to tear a tear of admiration from fans of the famous blue hedgehog when he came out of his den last year. It must be admitted that the game had shown itself in a good light, thanks in particular to a charming artistic direction voluntarily retro, at a sustained pace and a beautiful variety in its environments. It returns today with a "Plus" version which rolls out as its name suggests a list of fairly notable additions compared to the original title. Nevertheless, is it enough to put on your sneakers again and dive back into this elixir made of pixels concocted by Jared Kasl?
In order to immediately answer the questions that arise about the new content of this ultimate version of Sonic Mania subtitled “Plus”, it is simply the software published by Sega released in August 2017 with more playable characters, more game modes, lots of little tweaks and a new playable area. So this is a name that does not lie on the goods: it is definitely a final version with more content. Regarding the few adjustments requested by the players, made available during update 1.04 of the original software (and present in this edition), we note above all the arrival of transitions for each level of the epic, the possibility of skipping the cinematic scenes, or the addition of new waiting animations. The sets also have slight graphic changes in addition to some additional sounds. These may be details for you, but for enthusiasts, that means a lot.
The two new protagonists are also directly addressed to fans of the first hour, the same ones who count the checkerboards of Green Hill Zone in order to sleep. The cast indeed welcomes the pacifist, but nevertheless powerful Mighty. The armadillo is accompanied by Ray, a flying squirrel with shiny yellow coat. The two friends come to us from SegaSonic the Hedgehog, an arcade game released in 1993 which was enjoyed with a trackball. The heroes behave in the same way as the main characters, but still have their own skills. Mighty can for example make a stinging attack capable of destroying various elements of the scene, as well as crushing unfortunate adversaries. For his part, Ray has the ability to soar in the air in exactly the same way as a Mario with his cape in Super Mario World: the speed of the fall is used to manage the ascent to the skies. Without going so far as to recognize that these new protagonists are fundamentally essential to the basic roster, they at least have the merit of bringing a touch of additional variety in the way of approaching levels.

Behind these three letters hides in fact a concrete excuse to plunge back into an adventure called “remixed”. We thus find the hedgehog and all his click inside worlds coming from the original game sometimes slightly retouched (via different colors), or totally modified (with the arrival of a new boss). The conditions of failure are no longer completely the same, since the two small animals that can be embodied when desired, at the touch of a button, must be put on the mat in order to bring up the screen of game over. Items in the form of arrows allow the switch between allies who are not part of the pair. If the player finds himself alone following the disappearance of his squad, he can recover some comrades in different places of the stages. These bonus items are rather rare, which adds some difficulty.

We note that this version has a competitive mode playable with four, a rebalancing of the difficulty on the side of the bosses, and a new bonus level which takes the form of a pinball from which it is possible to recover his comrades missing in action. As for the promised new area, it is actually Angel Island which serves as a playable setting during the introductory scene. We would have appreciated more new arenas during this edition.

If there was a good reason to dive back into Sonic Mania or just discover it for the first time, it would have to be inside this “Plus” version of the game imagined by Jared Kasl. Thanks to its discreet but useful optimizations, the adventure gains in quality. The two new heroes blend perfectly into the roster and have powers that integrate well with the level design of the title, while the "Bis" mode changes some elements of the main campaign to surprise the regular. In the end, nothing changes drastically with this repetition, however Sonic has even more arguments for us to deign to follow him at high speed.
