Rainbow Skies game Review: Rainbow in the Dark
Rainbow Skies Test - The new title from the creators of Rainbow MoonTo understand some nods to the previous production from SideQuest Studios, you have to go back in time for half a decade. This is where we will find Rainbow Moon, for its initial release on PlayStation 3, then on PlayStation Vita, a year later. It’s in 2016 that the title moved to PlayStation 4. Fortunately for us, it didn’t have to wait that long to see Rainbow Skies on Sony’s latest console.
Not unforgettable, but nevertheless very correct, this first attempt for home consoles laid a good foundation for the future. Rainbow Skies is the story of many years of work. Long-term work therefore, to release a title that could claim the title of "good" RPG. Combining turn-based tactics with dungeon exploration, the production edited by Eastasiasoft has had time to prepare to enter the market. But were these years of preparation sufficient to guarantee quality?
We take what worked in Rainbow Moon, we improve, and here is Rainbow Skies
For starters, you might as well tell it right away, you're playing a swordsman. The latter is thrown out of the flying city on which he lives. Following an unfortunate accident due to a few slimes and a big explosion, you open your eyes to see the world from "below". Your task in these lands unknown to you is to find answers. To find them, you will have to advance into the heart of a sinister environment, where the narrative tries to counterbalance with well-placed humor, from the beginning to the end of the adventure.
Then, and since it's an RPG, Rainbow Skies carries the components. Thus, you will be able to improve your character, his characteristics, but also his equipment, his skills and his general level. To do this, you will have to fight against a plethora of enemies, but also come to the end of many quests skillfully dispatched along your tumultuous epic. These fights are thought to be easily won for anyone involved in the game of strategy, while the quests offer enough depth to interest the player at all times.
Of course, there will be no question of stopping there, since other gameplay elements are added to the adventure, to make it more pleasant and above all more complete. In this range of things to keep in mind is monster farming, which can help you to overcome a few small obstacles on many occasions. These little beasts bring a little freshness and diversity to the title, since they represent what one might look like bonus allies. They can also evolve in the same way as all the other characters on your team, with skills and equipment.
Thus, these creatures were thought to bring multiple strategic possibilities, which it is up to the player to use effectively. However, this will require considerable involvement if you wish to be able to use this mechanism in its entirety and be able to make a significant profit from it.
In addition, we can perceive some slight defects which do not leave, despite everything, not indifferent. If you are not used to the farm, you may be surprised. Indeed, the importance of leveling is such, that farming sessions are inevitable, but that will not, however, ruin your adventure, which remains well put together. Then, we cannot speak of a test, without coming to a surprising point to say the least. In order to smoothen the confrontations, the animations of your characters can be played. But surprisingly, the enemy’s cannot be. A strange choice that raises questions.
A successful composition, which seduces thanks to its good points
However, we cannot say that the defects of Rainbow Skies are legion, and the few defects already raised are quickly erased by all the positive points of production. And if we have already talked about the good work done on the narration and the universe, we must also highlight the soundtrack which is of good quality, and which blends completely with the rest of what is offered to us.
In addition, the many systems of the game are harmonized and offer a very pleasant whole to browse. One of the points we could mention in this set is the side quest system. You should know that it is very complete, and that the quests are plentiful. With this in mind, most of the characters you come across will have something to ask you, a little activity to submit to you. And we are not going to spit on the alluring amount of missions that is offered, especially not in a game with content as important as that of Rainbow Skies. Despite everything, a game defect is linked to these quests: the interface. The menu is a nightmare to go through. And to make matters worse, the diversity of ancillary activities is somewhat disappointing. We would have liked more variety. And the same goes for dungeons!
To continue, it might be interesting to look at a few other elements. We would like to come back to the artistic direction. The latter recalls the turn-based RPGs available on portable console, or the oldest productions. And as much to say, it's pretty well orchestrated and the quality is there. Besides this little old-school side and the color palette of Rainbow Skies bring an atmosphere specific to the title, which knows how to be even more appreciable.
Finally, we would like to clarify that, as described above, the different mechanics of the game blend together harmoniously. The gargantuan content of the title, combined with a little farm and quality scriptwriting allow this independent production to stand out. The annex and the main frame coexist without difficulty, while offering invaluable freedom to the player in his progression. Progress that can be made at a sustained pace, or more calm, the choice being left to the one who holds the controller, to his desires.
