Yoshi's Crafted World Review
Yoshi's Crafted World: When the 2D platform meets exploration, it's all good!Far from the pharaonic Mario and Zelda, the Yoshi games have always been able to offer good experiences full of flavor, in a soft and flowery atmosphere. Yoshi’s Crafted World swims in its own waters, with a highly controlled formula, alone or in cooperation.
The best Nintendo mascot (no, look no, you know it's true) comes back to us with its enchanting story world. Let’s sweep away the pitch that still sees Kamek stealing the MacGuffin of the day: The Yoshi are looking for him through a multitude of colorful levels. One of the main interests of this episode, even of the whole series, lies in its art design. In Yoshi’s Crafted World, we discover a whole "handmade" universe, with cardboard houses, bits of string for a mechanism and tape to keep everything together. From the opening of a door to the destruction of a structure, we always find this idea of Do It Yourself which is the charm of this opus. Much more than in Woolly World, we sketch small smiles at each new idea that is revealed. The artists of the Good-Feel Inc studio have done wonders, which make this album a real journey. To this, let's add the soundtrack, perfectly adapted, using the usual banjos of the series associated with percussion for a purified result voluntarily obsolete. In short, the ideal touch.
EXPLORATION ABOVE ALL
Yoshi's Crafted World: When the 2D platform meets exploration, it's all good! It's not all about having a universe that makes you want to be visited: Yoshi’s Crafted World also offers a game design based on exploration in order to make us discover and delve into every corner until obsession. In each level, we say find 20 pieces and finish with 20 hearts while having taken care to collect all the flowers and a number of yellow pieces imposed. We must therefore ensure the recovery of four different elements to reach 100%, which is far from being an easy task. However, in a sense, Crafted World is not a difficult gameplay game. Enemies are more often presences than threats and even falling into a hole only loses a few hearts. Getting to the end of a level is not a challenge in itself: finding the hidden objects is the most difficult. And that’s all the interest. Snooping on each plot, interacting with the decor, Crafted World does better than its predecessor on all these points, which makes it a real 2D / exploration platform game. It must be said that despite the "straight line" aspect of the levels, the player must take into account the background and the foreground, which can both be achieved by drawing eggs. It is not uncommon, for example, to see a head sticking out of a bush and to realize that it was a Maskass who held a red coin. A kind of big game of hide and seek that forces the player to stay attentive at all times. Fortunately, normal levels have no timers, which makes it easier and pushes the exploration aspect even further.
IN SEARCH OF LOST TREASURE
Yoshi's Crafted World: When the 2D platform meets exploration, it's all good!If I am talking about normal levels, it is because there are, surprisingly, exceptions. There are for example passages in automatic scrolling, including an excellent level in shadow, for example. Some of these levels use a scoring system on which the final flowering depends, to add an ounce of challenge to the whole. But since exploration is definitely the watchword of Yoshi's Crafted World, know that a good part of the “side quests” consists of going back to the levels to find “finds” hidden in the background, but also and above all to redo levels upside down to find three mini-poochy. You heard right, you can redo all the levels in the other direction, which means that the plan changes and that you then see the back of the decor! You will then discover what cardboard houses and other trinkets are made of, often constructed from cans, milk packs, food packaging and other treats. A nice idea especially as these timed tests are quite different from the original appearance of the levels to be worth it! Hooray!
To stay in the collection aspect, note that to the finds are added Yoshi's outfits, unlockable via a gacha system that uses the yellow coins found in the levels. In addition to the variety of outfits, they allow Yoshi to parry a certain number of blows before starting his health, perfect for ensuring that he obtains the health bonus on each level. Not that it was very difficult, but let's move on!
Yoshi's Crafted World: When the 2D platform meets exploration, it's all good!
With its cute and good-natured side, Yoshi’s Crafted World adapts to all audiences, including video game neophytes. Besides, we see it as an excellent experience in cooperation because its challenge based on the exploration more than on the difficulty of its platform / action phases makes the alliance of two players of different levels quite possible. Playing with your daughter, husband or mom is an experience without any frustration, where even a New Super Mario Bros could trigger some ranting between a seasoned player and a Sunday player.
The notes
+ Positive points
A most successful platform / exploration mix!
The "craft" aspect of the decorations, pretty and original
The pleasure of discovering the levels
Some really interesting gameplay passages
Fun in cooperation, without frustration
Very accessible
-Negative points
A sawtooth resolution
The framerate on the map
Some random invisible secrets to find
By directing all of its gameplay towards pure exploration, Yoshi’s Crafted World makes the right choice and offers a most enjoyable experience. It is with pleasure and curiosity that we explore the levels, constantly discovering new ideas and secrets by the dozen. Although you should not expect a challenge in terms of pure gameplay, its main advantage is to offer a real naive and enchanting ride, which we strongly advise you to take in pairs.
