F-Zero GX

If F-Zero GX takes almost everything that made the success of the Nintendo 64 episode (no offense to fans of the excellent Super Nintendo version), it is however adorned with a brand new dress can not be more classy. This new episode of the famous series of futuristic races, straight out of the factories of Sega, is not satisfied with being beautiful (and it is little to say it) but offers in addition to the players a simple, efficient and terribly maneuverability. enjoyable.

Even today, we have a little trouble not having the hiccups by seeing on the same screen the names of Sega and Nintendo, and yet. Currently, Sega wants to be a key developer on all new generation consoles. And when we see that Nintendo has entrusted them with the realization of their new F-Zero, it is to say if the hatchet is definitively buried between the two big and this for the pleasure of all the players. Because yes, F-Zero GX is pure pleasure.

This new episode of the saga which goes over 1000 km / h is much more like the Nintendo 64 episode than the Super Nintendo games. So you are always going to get out of it in crazy, crazy, crazy races on 3 laps. Against you, nothing less than 29 competitors, snarling, fast, unforgiving! While the goal of the game (at least in Grand Prix mode) will be to reach the first place at the end of the 5 circuits which constitute a championship, nothing will prevent you during the races from overcoming your competitors. To do this, you can, among other things, use your ship like a top, spinning on yourself and sending the flying ships which would be out of luck to get too close to you. And who says ejection from the circuit instantly says end of the race, this also applies to you. Prudence will therefore be more than ever a mother of safety.

In addition, you can also use a side attack to try to destroy enemy vehicles. But in absolute terms, all this makes you lose speed and therefore time, the best way to win will be to arrive in the very first. To get there you will have to pass over the areas with a lightning bolt which are scattered throughout the tracks, to gain speed. After the first round, a turbo will also be available, the latter being used sparingly, since each time you switch it on your energy bar will decrease. Knowing that if you hit the scene, if you are hit by an enemy, this energy bar will also empty. You will be able to recharge it while passing on zones envisaged for this purpose, but in all the cases, you will have to show a lot of cold blood and reflection to shine. Another important point is the fact that with each race you will have a rival. If you manage to knock it down you will get a skull that will fill your energy bar. Arrived at five skulls, you acquire a new vessel, among 30 racing cars.

What we can say is that F-Zero GX does not really rely on the originality of its game modes: Time Attack, VS Battle where 4 players will compete, Training and Story mode ( and its challenges to be met). You can also customize a vessel by purchasing or creating it after obtaining spare parts, creating an emblem, changing the color of your racing car, placing logos on the wings, the cockpit, etc. This is a bit like Kingdom Hearts' Gummi ship but, uh, much better. To quickly return to the other modes, the Grand Prix will invite you to participate in three championships which each correspond to a difficulty mode. The Story mode, in which only Captain Falcon will be accessible, is made up of various challenges. We are also a little surprised at its structure. Indeed rather than chaining the chapters, you will first have to finish the first objective in two difficulty modes in order to get tickets to then buy the next chapter and so on. In short it is a bit heavy, the developers have complicated life for nothing but it is still nice and stuffed with small sequences in computer graphics, yum.

F-Zero GX doesn't look like an arcade machine, it's a good arcade machine! ! Besides, you can use your backup with the F-Zero AX arcade machine to use your own vehicles, unlock bonuses, earn items. Cool right? The graphics are simply the most beautiful I have ever seen for a racing game on a 128-bit console! It is a real visual slap, an enchantment of every moment. In twenty races Sega will have succeeded in creating disparate environments but which all have one thing in common: beauty. The tracks are stunning (in all senses of the word), a multitude of animations dazzle the player, the animation is HALLUCINANTE (long live 60 Hz mode) despite the 29 competitors and the complex architecture of the circuits to be displayed. As a bonus, not a single slowdown is to report, my most sincere congratulations to the developers of Sega. And this impression of being in an arcade room is accentuated by occasional sound effects and techno music perfect for immersion, although a little kitsch for some.

And the question you may be asking yourself is: Is F-Zero GX the announced masterpiece? Well yes and no. The aesthetics of the game are stunning, the lifespan consistent, and the gameplay is fine-tuned to the last detail. In its realization, Sega's game is an absolute wonder. After the game is much but then too difficult! We have three difficulty modes, but even starting to win the first championship will be difficult. Even more annoying, the Story mode which, from the first chapter, will give you a hard time.

In short if you are not the relentless type, you risk throwing your controller or your Logitech Speed Force steering wheel (although the latter is less practical than your good old pad) across the television screen. So should you miss F-Zero GX if you don't know the Nintendo 64 episode or if you're not a paddleboard pro? Certainly not. This title is too good, too enjoyable, too exciting to leave it on the stall of your dealer telling you that you will not succeed. Such games are too rare to let them slip away. Believe me, your Cube will thank you for offering this mini-DVD overflowing with fun.

The notes
Graphics 19/20
20 races with incredibly tortuous tracks. The architecture of the slopes is very elaborate and if it is sometimes difficult to find your way around the first time you try it, you will find your bearings very quickly. In addition, many animations (giant “Dunesque” worms, lightning, columns of flame, etc.) will dazzle you with their magnificence.

Gameplay 18/20
Know how to use the triggers to manage the turns well. The animation is so fluid, the races so fast that you will have a lot of difficulty at the start. But if you can tame the router attack, if you pay attention to your energy bar, that you show a lot of skill and attention, you should be able to make a name for yourself.

Lifespan 17/20
The 4 game modes are not really original, but between the Grand Prix and the Story mode you will have plenty to do. Besides, we will blame the game for a far too great difficulty which will sigh more than one. Perseverance is requested at reception. Finally, many bonuses will also be unlocked.

Soundtrack 16/20
During the cutscenes, the characters benefit from a good dubbing, and the sound effects and music are totally in the Arcade spirit of the game. Impeccable to enter the game completely. In short, very good work for well-punched techno music that does everything similarly sometimes a little too Dance of the 90s but hey…

Scenario/
A myth of the futuristic racing game returns to the Cube and God what a return! F-Zero GX is undoubtedly one of the best titles, of the Nintendo console all styles combined. We would have just liked a bit more ambitious game modes and a much less present difficulty. But for a first 128-bit episode, the Nintendo series is very strong. We are impatiently awaiting the next episode and for the moment we will send our sincere thanks to Sega for this pure jewel where the only limits will be your dexterity and your reflexes.
