battlefield 1942 review

Battlefield 1942
And here it is, the new FPS from Electronic Arts! You should not get impatient like that, everything comes just in time to who knows how to wait. Get ready for a little revolution in online shooting, Battlefield is coming and it does not intend to go unnoticed within the community of online players, followers of the team frag.

Anyway, it was about time that he arrived, because I suspect some of them were already very upset about the demo released a month ago. Did you like the appetizer? That's good, the main course is even better. For those who do not know, Battlefield 1942 is the newcomer in the FPS online category which will transport the player in the very fashionable background of the Second World War. But the title intends to stand out from its small competitors. So, where do we start?

Let's look at the game modes first. First of all, know that if the game has been clearly planned for online, a single player mode is indeed present. This campaign simply offers you to play in the company of our friends the bots, on the multis maps that you will have to unlock one after the other. This is actually the only difference from multiplayer games, perfect for training a little. By cons in the long run, we quickly see the limits of AI bots which are not always very effective (we will come back to this). For the rest, we find the classic Team Deathmatch and the basic CTF.

So let's get to the heart of the game. Conquest mode. In principle it is a CTF, but with nuances. On each card, you will find control points that you will have to conquer. These points are as many outposts that mark the progress of your troops, as in the real war, except that here we do not have to shave our hair or be cold on our feet. You will tell me that it reminds you of a certain Domination mode of a certain Unreal Tournament, in which you will be right. But B1942 introduces a little strategic subtlety that changes everything: tickets. Follow well. Each team has a certain number of tickets which correspond to the number of players' lives. One death = one less ticket. To make matters worse, the less a camp has checkpoints, the more tickets it loses. It doesn't sound like much, but strategically speaking, we clearly feel the difference that there can be between having more or less than half of the checkpoints. As you will probably have understood, the game ends when those opposite have no more tickets to respawn or when your domination is overwhelming. War is well known, it's a question of tickets.

Still on the subject of these “flags”, each time you die, you will be able to choose on which point you wish to reappear in order to lend a hand to a team in full defense or preparing to launch an assault. It will also be possible on this occasion to choose a new class of player and to obtain the corresponding equipment (anti-tank, infantryman, sapper, sniper ...). It will be necessary to adapt to the circumstances. It goes without saying that communication and good understanding of the players in the development of game tactics and immediate actions will be absolutely essential in Battlefield 1942. Defend yes, but what defense? Terrestrial anti-tanks or anti-guys who run, anti-air or naval?

Now the other super enjoyable point: the vehicles. Not content with offering us a very attractive game principle, we are also given the opportunity to move around (alone or with others) aboard a multitude of vehicles that go from the chariot to the boat via the jeep, armored transport and aircraft. And oh surprise, the physical models are quite satisfactory (well, it's not Flight Simulator either, but I still have the memory of a certain Mobile Forces and hem, hem). It's our shelling and other surprise landing. Of course, each assault vehicle has its defensive counterpart, by way of example, know that knocking down a Zero with a heavy blow from DCA is really good! By the way it is precisely on board the machines that we take the measure of the stupidity of the bots. When they order the machine gun they don't fire and when they drive they get stuck everywhere.

Which brings me to talking about achievement. We start with bots and their AI, which is sometimes a bit limited, as well as a pathfinder so powerful that it will happen to see a soldier get stuck in front of a tank, smug in admiration in front of so many beautiful nuts painted in green. We will therefore quickly replace them with 2/3 humans lying around. There are also clipping bugs on the characters and vehicles which sometimes have an annoying tendency to flash or disappear altogether (A patch! A patch!). Here, that was the sequence "I say evil". The rest is just beautiful. And above all the cards are particularly well done. On the one hand, they are inspired by great historical battles (Stalingrad will soon become the favorite map of snipers :) but also have all the qualities required to give rise to savage clashes between 32 and 64 players. And in terms of the game atmosphere, you will not be disappointed.

What more can be said ? Battlefield 1942 is certainly one of the online shooters of the year, as for its possible competition with the imminent Unreal Tournament 2003, I am not sure that it should be, the two titles not giving definitively not in the same genre. Because without being hyper-realistic, Battlefield is far from being as speed and violent as a UT2k3. B1942 gives more in the strategic and aims to immerse us in an atmosphere with a historical character. A stimulating conquest mode, a captivating atmosphere, the use of vehicles as successful as fun and an overall achievement not stung by beetles make this app a reference.

The notes
Graphics 16/20
It is regrettable to note the presence of certain bugs (in the version provided in any case) but it must be recognized that the environments do not lack aesthetics even if one does not exceed the standards that are MoH and RTCW and that the decorations are sometimes a little poor. But most importantly: the maps are really well structured. Attention, good config 'recommended for the game to roll.

Gameplay 17/20
Bourino-strategic gameplay is a formula that works. In addition the handling is that of an FPS, so ... The large number of orders or requests require a little learning. Good point, the vehicles are very easy to drive and you quickly take your foot in a chariot.

Lifespan 17/20
As long as there are servers. On the other hand, in solo, we go around very quickly so it is obvious that if you do not intend to play online, the lifespan will seem awfully short. Otherwise, no complaints.

Soundtrack 16/20
Sober but effective. The different effects are successful and we appreciate the noise of planes that crash when we descend them savagely at the DCA.

Scenario/
Battlefield is a game apart in the world of online shoots. Neither completely naff, nor super tactical, the title still offers a stimulating strategic side which will force cooperation between the players. With its realistic background and convincing atmosphere, the title of EA pays itself the luxury of being immersive. As for the use of vehicles, it is simply brilliant. I repeat: a reference.
