Unravel 2 game Review: Partners In Twine
He enchanted us with his grip, his universe and his words centered around the grandparents: Unravel is back in a second episode that bears his name particularly well, since it is subtitled Two. It allows us to carry out the entire adventure in coop, without abandoning the possibility of doing it alone. A rich idea, which we were eager to try controller in hand.
A few hours later, we find everything that made the heart of the first Unravel experience of the name: a clever mix of puzzles based on physics and the use of the character's wool on one side, and of sequences of other platforms. All in a series of levels taking us back through the rural landscapes of Sweden.
YARNY, FIRST OF THE CORDEA
The basics of handling do not differ much from those of the first Unravel, which was already complete on this point. However, this second opus still offers some novelties mainly centered around the presence of a second woolen man alongside Yarny. Thus, the two can separate, regroup, help each other when rappelling or take advantage of their double ball of wool to solve inventive and varied puzzles. Using the rope as a pendulum, winding the wool around a pulley or even triggering a mechanism that benefits the second player, there is no shortage of ideas here. Interestingly, it is possible to embed a friend at any time in your game, but also to do the whole adventure solo without the whole becoming more complex.NOT SO COTTON
However, we advise to make the adventure in team, the title remaining more pleasant in this form. The addition of an index system, the function to slow down time and the possibility of merging the characters also make the whole accessible to novice players, which will not fail to attract the attention of parents wishing to play with their child, for example. It took us about 6 hours to see the end of the adventure in a straight line, knowing that you can then try more robust levels - taking the form of challenges - or more simply seek all the optional collectible elements. The challenges also allow you to unlock elements used to personalize the two Yarny, a little more appreciable.WEAVING BREAKDOWN
If landscapes often have a slight taste of deja-vu, each level has the merit of introducing new mechanisms and offering a well-calibrated and progressive difficulty. On the other hand, the backstory turns out to be much less inspired than that of the first opus, particularly touching with its sub-text focused on family memories. This time we follow in the footsteps of two young people chased by adults who set off a series of disasters on their way. Without saying too much, it is difficult to pin down a message as touching as that of the first opus and it turns out to be even more classic and less correlated to the presence of the two woolly characters. Too bad, because it was one of the most interesting points of its predecessor.UNRAVEL, VEL VEL VEL LIKE THE DAY
Difficult to blame Unravel Two much visually and acoustically, it retains the same standards as its elder on these two points which had already seduced us during our test of the founding episode. The realistic style of the surroundings once again highlights the tiny character of our heroes, for whom each branch, each watercourse becomes a source of danger. Note, however, that in terms of the music on offer, a certain amount of redundancy takes hold over time, where the first album managed to offer some more striking themes. Not enough to spoil the whole thing, fortunately. The notes
+ Positive points
Level design and handling adapted for 1 or 2 players
Technically and artistically superb
More difficulty thanks to the challenges
Well-thought-out aids for neophytes
A pretty soundtrack ...
-Negative points
… A redundant coat after a few hours
Obviously less interesting in solo than two
A background frame much less inspired than that of the first
If it keeps this colorful and cute aspect of the first episode, Unravel Two still manages to renew the experience thanks to good ideas. It relies for this on the presence of a second character allowing to realize the whole adventure with a friend, but who has the good taste not to prevent us from going it alone on the one hand, and to be adapted beginners, on the other hand. On the other hand, it gains in mechanics what it loses in subtext, the background screen being much more confused and less touching than that of the first. If you do not pay much attention to this point, you will however find in Unravel Two a nice platformer very pleasant to browse in coop.
