Sunless Skies Review
It is a "literary" game, history, texts and other dialogues are at the center of this game even if there is a great deal of exploration. If you are looking for an adventure game with action, this is not the place to go (even if technically there is action but I would come back to it).* (EDIT post game exit: More or less topical, the history and the universe is still at the center of the game but the fights are much more dynamic now). *
Once that said let's get to the heart of the matter, what is Sunless skies?
It is a game still in early access (it comes out in 2019 if I remember correctly) developed by failbetters game which also made Sunless Sea which is the big brother of Sunless skies and finally Fallen London, a free browser game (which I highly recommend you if the 2 points at the start suit you). All these games take place in the same universe which is .... Absurd as possible but it's wanted! I would not go into details since it is quite hard to explain but it has a very developable lore. But the goal of Sunless skies is simple: you are a captain of a locomotive-shaped spaceship (yes) who will explore the different places of space (some really make me think of the islands of the cartoon Dragon hunter) with for objective to make wheat and to make the various history which strews our card and this while taking care not to die of hunger, to become insane, to lose its essence.
First positive point: IT'S BEAUTIFUL! Well it's not a triple A either should not mess around huh. But clearly they had fun in the artistic direction of the game and that's really good, their previous 2 games being quite austere. Between New Winchester, Port Avon and other Carillon, there is really something to marvel at, be it in terms of decor or music.
* (EDIT post game release: The DA has been revisited and further improved I honestly find that for a small studio like Failbetters the game is sublime graphically, I would like to add that the music is just as superb) *
Second positive point: the RPG dimension, clearly improving in this opus even if it can be improved. The choices of the past of your character during your level crossing, the creation of your portrait etc ... We can really personalize his character and play rp without the game penalizing us. I also add that we do not hold your hand by putting a marker "you have to go for the mission" in addition to each new game the places change places randomly. No need to look for the locations of places on Wikipedia it does not work! Some will not like it, but I love it when people don't take me by the hand from A to Z.
* (EDIT post game exit: Improve it further with now a more consistent didactic introduction than just a message with the basic keys, I warn the basic keys are in QWERTY remember to modify) *
Third positive: We can finally make easy money (Those who made Sunless Sea will understand me)! True black point of Sunless Sea where we chased the cash that we sorely missed, it is more accessible here with a better trading system. Suddenly we are no longer obliged to optimize the pixel ready so as not to fall in the harbor of cash and with, refueling and petrol. Do not waste it either, the difficulty largely resting on it, but it is less punitive for my taste.
* (EDIT post game exit: no significant change on this subject) *
I do not judge the stories yet since they are not fully implemented in the game, but since this is the central point, they are not supposed to mess it up, they have the experience of Fallen London and Sunless Sea with them.
* (EDIT post game exit: I can judge now and the stories are very good sublimate by the overall atmosphere) *
Good after all these positive points it is time to spend on the various black points of the game.
First negative point: Your locomotive is a real soap, that or it is I who am a real bag to handle a space steam locomotive which is very possible. But for now, 95% of the HP I have lost are due to the fact that I end up in asteroids of all kinds. * (EDIT post game exit: I'm still as much a bag as a year ago)
Second negative point: The fights: I told you that there is not much action is it is rather true but we can still come across enemies: pirate or other lovecraftian filth. The fight is very dynamic certainly but as I said in the previous point, your locomotive is a soap and more: there is no target system! Everything is done on a trial basis, not that it bothers me but aiming right quickly becomes very difficult. This is clearly something to improve.
