Mega Man 11 game Review
Mega Man 11: A successful 30th anniversary! The man who calls himself Rock Man in Japan is back! After several years of absence - except for compilations orchestrated by Capcom - Mega Man finally has the honor of appearing in an unreleased episode! For the thirtieth anniversary of the Blue Bomber, the publisher has designed an adventure under the sign of modernity, the foundations of which date back to the origins of the license. By paying homage to the past, without forgetting the expectations of the new generation, Mega Man 11 displays great ambition and solid innovations. Dr. Wily has nothing to do well!
The story of Mega Man 11 begins with a flashback. So robotics students, Thomas Light and Albert Wily aspire to a better world and dream of a perfect harmony between humans and robots. But where Light wants to develop independent thinking for each android, Wily advocates power and performance. With such divergent visions, the point of no return is inevitable. While developing his Double Gear system, Wily is halted in its progress by the Committee ... which approves the research of his now rival. Nourished by his revenge, he will be neutralized several times by Mega Man, the protégé of Dr. Light. But you can't stop Wily that easily ...
While Light and his cronies go about their business, Wily arrives in the laboratory and takes over the professor's robots. The Double Gear, his device which won him a rejection from the Committee, is now functional and can cause great harm to the population. Faced with the urgency of the situation, Mega Man decides to use the Double Gear in his turn to fight, as equals, against his new opponents. The starting point of a beating adventure!
DOUBLE-DEALING
For the thirtieth anniversary of the series, Capcom has kept the formula of the previous episodes. The game thus consists of crossing a series of levels by recovering the power of the defeated bosses to fight your way to the fortress of the old mustache by exploiting the weak points of other guards. Then just use the slice keys to juggle between the different skills acquired. Each course responding to a theme (electricity, fire, ice, rock ...) and the good old elementary triangle, it is best to follow a certain logic to facilitate its progress. Nothing like eliminating the boss with electrical power and taking care of the one with ice capacities before attacking the fire keeper. It's classic, but the formula is still as effective.
For gameplay, we should not expect major upheavals. It's still a game that mixes action with the platform with mid-distance mini-boss fights. Jump, shot, energy concentration ... all the clichés of the series are present! At any time, Mega Man can call on Rush, either to use a spring (to catch items, avoid enemies ...), or by climbing on his back to temporarily move from point A to point B The novelties, meanwhile, are to be found on the side of Double Gear. Now, thanks to this system, the hero can, for a few seconds, slow down time - the animation then goes into "bullet time" mode - or boost the power of his shot. The level design, quite vertical, has been studied for this purpose and establishes a real dynamism, the Double Gear allowing to improve the management of its jumps, to optimize its movements or to dodge with more efficiency. It is also possible, provided you combine the two powers, but this technique is to be used as a last resort because it makes the gauge unusable for longer. On the other hand, if that makes things a little easier, don't think that Mega Man 11 lacks challenge.
ROBO-RATIF
The developers of Capcom did not skimp on the bestiary and the obstacles. If each level begins fairly calmly, the Blue Bomber is soon overwhelmed by hostile waves. Enemies disembark from all corners and respawn immediately as soon as you walk away and return to the area. Some protect themselves while others use various ploys to surprise you, be it projectiles or sudden and destabilizing movements. We are not even talking about the opponents who are constantly beating on you. You have to keep an eye on everything and sharpen your reflexes, otherwise you will be expensive. But Capcom is not fooled. The era has changed and there is no longer any question of having games as difficult as in the 1980s. Consequently, Mega Man 11 offers several difficulty modes that adapt to your skills. In casual mode, falls are not fatal (the hero is recovered by Beat, his little blue bird). Blue Bomber is also more resistant, unlike its more brittle opponents. But for lovers of difficulty to be reassured, it is enough to return to Normal or Expert mode to find yourself facing challenges worthy of the name. Under these conditions, Light’s laboratory will not be too much to manufacture support objects (titanium boots, energy capsule, extra life ...) or different modules improving the capabilities of the blue avatar.
THE SMALL PLUS
Once the main adventure is over (as soon as all the bosses are defeated, several levels lead to Wily's fortress), the player can go to the extras where online rankings await, a gallery and above all a myriad of challenges, some of which are unlockable. In addition to the time trial consisting of completing each level as quickly as possible, the menu offers different types of tests: jump as few times as possible, shoot as little as possible, chain combos to get the best score, destroy balloons blueprints, find portraits, complete each level in the allotted time, etc. This allows you to extend the pleasure for a few hours, especially for competition enthusiasts.
Mega Man 11: A successful 30th anniversary! Mega Man 11: A successful 30th anniversary!
If publishers sometimes allow themselves to be slack when it comes to touching the nostalgic fiber, Mega Man 11 proves that Capcom has not taken the return of its franchise lightly. The NES style of Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 has given way to a colorful and successful cel-shading. Yuji Ishihara's artistic direction is excellent and the environments, like the visual effects, are neat. The animation suffers from no slowdown and lets appreciate flexible and detailed movements. The taste for a job well done is found in its different musical themes, at the same time traditional, modern and always very rhythmic. No really, the fans can be reassured: Mega Man has not lost anything of its superb!
The notes
+ Positive points
Art direction successful
Colorful graphics
Double Gear integration
Excellent gameplay ideas
Winks to old episodes
-Negative points
Some inaccuracies
Once mastered, the title ends quickly
Visually uneven decor
For its thirtieth anniversary, Mega Man signs a comeback with fanfare. This eleventh episode, completed on all floors, has the merit of being open to all categories of players. Its bright gameplay ideas, its atmosphere, its well-balanced difficulty and its quality of finish make it a title of choice. The tribute, combining old mechanics and new concepts, proves that this aspect was not taken lightly by Capcom and that's great! We can therefore hope for future Blue Bomber adventures in the coming months.
