FIFA 19 Nintendo Switch Review - Offside

FIFA 19: A second honest but stagnant Switch incursion

In 2017, EA took advantage of the Switch's hot start to launch a version of its FIFA 18 on the latter. Adapting its content and its engine, the title stood out as a satisfactory alternative. Rebelote this year, with a FIFA 19 which points its nose on the hybrid console of Nintendo. The trend has been given since last year, and we expected this new album to embark on improvements in order to prevail among those wishing to take a good game of football everywhere.

Because there is the heart of the reflection: FIFA 19 does it once again present on the console, despite a significantly different version of its counterpart PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One? Does he manage to erase the wanderings of the previous version to get closer, at least in terms of content and sensations, to the other versions?

FIFA MAIGRI

In terms of content, FIFA 19 on Switch embeds the two big novelties this year, namely the Champions League and the Europa League. They have their own mode in addition to integration into Career mode, and are really highlighted by EA from the menu. Also, the personalized rules are indeed present, and allow you to configure your own matches, for example removing a random player as soon as you score, validating only the goals scored in the volley or half-volley, or the possibility of not counting offside and tackling assassins. In addition, players can count on the Career mode, which is always as comprehensive and engaging. However, the title running on the Ignite engine, used for the last time on FIFA 16, and not on the Frosbite, players have to make a cross on the Adventure mode, which enjoys a new occurrence on the other versions. For the same reasons, the cutscenes during transfers disappear, leaving only the classic screen known before.

As for the online modes, we must now think about the fact that the Online has become paying before enjoying the Seasons and the online friendly, the Club Pro is unavailable, in the same way as in FUT, it will be necessary to do without the novelty of the year, Division Rivals, whose goal is to optimize matchmaking. On the other hand, the Draft mode and the creative challenges are very present, which still allows you to have something to do. Concretely, the heart of FIFA 19 is there, but relieved of a significant part of the novelties.

"IT COMES FROM NOWHERE ... A BATTLE HIT ..."

We know in advance, we should not expect FIFA 19 Switch to do like the so-called main versions in terms of sensations. However, it is expected to be an effective football game. If, most of the time, the title offers a fluid gameplay and acceptable sensations even if a little dated, several problematic faults come to tarnish the whole. Thus, the goalkeepers are a real plague, often reacting too late, making hazardous exits, and conceding too many goals when a strike is well executed, even from a distance. The synchronized finish, introduced on all supports, really does not help, since it makes typing even more precise. And despite tests in all difficulties, nothing helps, we score too much.

As in the old versions of the simulation, the AI regularly suffers from a strange placement, calls triggered too late, and collisions often create completely wacky situations, in which three or four players fall on top of each other . This problem is partially solved as soon as the level of difficulty is increased, which is not the case with the passes, which are often missed, due to the sticks present on the Joy-Con, whose stop is too abrupt and the movements, imprecise. We will thus prefer, if possible, to use the pad Pro, in order to find precision in the gestures. In the event of a problem on the ground, however, it will be necessary to do without many tactical options. It is therefore impossible to use the personalized team parameters according to attitude (offensive or defensive), nor rapid replacements. On the other hand, the detailed statistics are there, even if these go less far than in the main versions.

If you miss the options linked to the first refined controls, you quickly manage to have fun by raising the level of the game and diving into Career or Ultimate Team mode. After a few games, we take the measure of the defense, which is much easier to get rid of the pressing, allowing to better develop its game. Thus, if we regret a general lack of improvements in the gameplay, it would be dishonest not to emphasize a good general balance, even if the latter is closer to FIFA 18 than the opus of this year, by its aspect "fast attack" and its "standing defense, but rough".

A GOOD TECHNICAL REFINEMENT

If there is one thing we can't fault FIFA 19 on Switch for, it's its optimization. The console perfectly manages the Ignite engine, and remains constantly at 60 frames per second, in TV mode as in portable. Declines are only felt when slowed down or when players enter. Nothing problematic since as soon as we play, all the lights are green. Overall, the animations are finer and the lighting management is much better with better managed saturation.

This has the effect of offering a more pleasant game to the eye, improving the portable experience introduced last year. If the public is ugly and the faces, except stars, are not very detailed, we find ourselves in front of a title honoring its support.

There are some collision and physics problems with the balloon, but this corresponds more to the aging engine than to bugs or a development problem. If this can pass for a detail, it should not be forgotten that the portability of the title is its main argument, and that this technical optimization plays much more in its favor than the reverse.

The notes
+ Positive points
Portability
Refined visuals and a constant framerate
The few new modes
Finally integrated possibility to play against your friends online

-Negative points
The substantive improvements for the most part absent from this version
Imprecision of orders via Joy-con
The weakness of the guards, all difficulties understood
Content all the same amputated

FIFA 19 on Switch stagnates and does not really manage to correct the problems of its predecessor, by including goalkeepers still as weak, by limiting its content, especially tactical, and by forgetting to improve the sensations in game. However, it contains well what makes the essence of its DNA, has taken care of its technical aspect and introduced some new features including European competitions and face to face online via its list of friends. We will also appreciate the new Kick-off modes, the portability and the refinement of its technique. Unfortunately, FIFA 19 Switch has no competition, which makes it an honest title for anyone who wants to play everywhere. But for the same reasons, this results in an opus which is not really progressing with respect to FIFA 18, and whose gap with the main versions is even more glaring. In the end FIFA 19 does the job, but remains only advisable for football fans unable to play on other media.
