Downwell game Review - Polished Boots
Downwell, a Rogue Like Shooter to die forWhile today, we observe the ever increasing multiplication of titles with over-assisted playability, it is like Downwell who offer gameplay giving a hard time to the most relentless players, leaving besides, the notion of storyline completely aside, to the chagrin of some.
Downwell is therefore a Shooter, developed almost exclusively by the Japanese Ojiro Fumoto a.k.a Moppin and published by Devolver Digital. It integrates the principles of Rogue Like, the different existing levels being generated randomly, respecting each time only the codes of the level in which you are evolving. It is preferable to use a joystick, keyboard play being possible, but much less practical. It is offered on Steam for the modest sum of 2.99 €, here we will try to see if it is worth integrating your library.
FALLING FOR BETTER ADVANCE
If it is customary to have to rise or evolve to the right to advance, Downwell really stands out by offering a progression down. The principle, at first sight simplistic, although based on the classics of the genre, constitutes a real demarcation compared to the usual titles, the main weapon perfectly matching this mechanism. Indeed, far from this title the idea of a hand weapon allowing the character to defend himself from the enemies facing him.Downwell, a Rogue Like Shooter to die for
Boots allow you to defend yourself against your various opponents. First, with the different weapons available on the way. By firing rounds of bullets, rockets and other lasers, you will be able to destroy not only your enemies, but also the blocks of the many platforms present on your course, favoring strategies despite the perpetual combat, perfectly avoiding a redundant and sometimes forbidding aspect. However, you can obviously explode creatures whose sole purpose is obviously to make you lose life. Depending on the cannon you have armed with your boots, the shots will be explosions, lasers or even bullets, the choice of weapons thus becoming a crucial element of strategy. You will therefore have to choose them carefully according to the levels and the opponents present on each of them, obviously hoping that the generation will be lenient with you.As for the playability, it is simply perfect. Based on a great fluidity of the game and the movements, the game with the joystick proves to be very intuitive, perfectly compensating for its partial use of the joystick. Indeed, the game uses only three keys on the joystick or keyboard.
A VERY PRESENT DIFFICULTY
To succeed at Downwell, there is no secret, success will come to you by dint of relentlessness. Indeed, the levels being always new, it is much more complicated to find automatisms, and thus to progress serenely. One of the elements that creates difficulty is certainly the obligation to start over from the beginning during a death. To achieve this, at each end of level, you can choose one of the three improvement bonuses offered. You will also be able to collect gems in order to collect 100 in order to reach a frantic state of a few seconds, which will help you in your game. These gems can also allow you to buy in stores.
Downwell, a Rogue Like Shooter to die for
The enemies, by the diversity of their forms, their aggressive or not aggressive characters, or by their concentration in a space, will force you to compose instantly, increasing once again, the complexity to progress. Even the players most accustomed to titles in the genre should toil so much, even the principles of the game well understood, it calls on reflexes and logic simultaneously. The difficulty is therefore very present in Downwell, it is even one of the key points of this title, it even allows it to stand out, offering the most experienced, a challenge not least.STUNNING RETRO GRAPHICS
If the 8-bit graphics leaving the pixels appear well can put off some, many are those who appreciate them by simple nostalgia, or by love of the graphic style. As you progress through the game, you will gain, on each level, "palettes", allowing you to personalize the graphic style of the game. Being able to adapt the images to your preferences, promote a personalized gaming experience in which you and your pupils feel comfortable. One of the key points of a game like this is clearly the soundtrack. And it is clearly not on this point that we will be able to find faults in Downwell, the game resting on perfectly lively and energetic music. It fits perfectly into the gameplay and undoubtedly constitutes a real success, a strong point.
The notes
+ Positive points
Difficulty very present, offering a real challenge
Soundtrack very well done
Good playability
Interesting concept
Very low price
-Negative points
Not accessible to everyone because of its difficulty
Rather short service life
Downwell is therefore one of these small independent games without the slightest pretension, except to make you have a good time. For only € 3, ten hours of happiness and challenge are offered to the player. Interesting graphics complement a pleasant and catchy soundtrack. The rather original concept, well complemented by a very present difficulty, ends up seducing us.
