TEST Double Cross - Fun and fun but too fast shipped

What if, in the end, the reality we experience every day is only one possible world among an infinity of others? What if, by digging into this idea, we existed in other realities but in other forms, having followed another path? No, rest assured, ActuGaming has not become a philosophy forum! Today we are talking about presenting the game developed by the independent studio 13Am Games, Double Cross.

The Balance of Worlds in Danger

The title, released on PC and Switch on January 10, 2019, is an action-oriented and investigative platform game. You play as Zahra Sinclair, a brilliant young heroine with exceptional abilities. Zahra is part of the R.I.F.T. (Regulators of Interdimensional Frontiers and Technology), an elite unit designed to ensure peace between the different dimensions and thwart interdimensional crimes. Because indeed, in this game, the journey between several parallel dimensions is the culmination of the peregrinations of the different characters. Each dimension implements a unique scenario where the arrangement of objects and beings is particular, following its own logic. We therefore understand, implicitly, that a good character in one world can correspond to a bad alter ego in another. And this is precisely where the trouble begins! And for good reason ! How can we not intuitively imagine that some might be tempted to play on different tables, different dimensions? What would be possible in one dimension might not be in another. Malicious individuals may want to sow chaos between these coexisting realities!

This is where the R.I.F.T. and his team, to thwart interdimensional plots. A true guardian of the galaxy, this shock team surveys realities on the lookout for crimes of all kinds. Only, from the start of the adventure, the squad faced a major challenge: the R.I.F.T. was hacked leaving crucial information to be leaked. It also seems that a mole, even within this impeccable service, is behind this leak. Get down to battle, you have to find this intruder who threatens the balance of worlds at all costs!

Let the investigation begin!

As the investigation begins, you will have to glean here and there clues and evidence to submit a solid and complete case to your superiors. For this, you will have to go to three alternative dimensions: Fangetopia, Reptarria and the Ecladome. These three areas are each broken down into three levels with increasing difficulty and they end with a specific boss. Each area has its own environment and its own enemies. On the whole, however, the logic is the same. Helped by his proton propellant, Zahra will have to climb from platform to platform until reaching stage points of the level, synonymous with backup.

For this, it will have two categories of skills. On the one hand, a series of modular skills allowing him to move better, to heal himself or simply to be more effective in his attacks. For these, you can only select three at a time. On the other hand, "permanent" skills which accumulate as you progress. These are mainly special moves and health bonuses. It now remains to travel to the heart of these different worlds in search of the truth about the intruder: the Suspect X. To reach him, you will have to dismantle his entire network of accomplices, gather all the evidence to finally drop the mask of this traitor!

Trendy graphics and gameplay

This interdimensional quest is supported by a graphic visual rather pleasing to the eye. The lines of the various characters are quite fine in the style of a fairly dynamic colorful cartoon. The different levels are rather well laid out, although sometimes a bit empty in certain sectors. Designed with their own logic, they each distill in their own way a singular atmosphere in well chosen tones.

Gameplay level Zahra's movements are fluid and fairly intuitive. The handling of the proton propellant, the major asset of our heroine, is quite simple even if certain phases of action are, a bit, frustrating. In the end, we quickly take the fold of this title resolutely turned towards fun. The investigation dimension is there for many.

That's all ?

Unfortunately, this rather positive overview is not enough, the fault in some disappointing points. Life first. Do not expect to stay on the track for more than 6 or 7 hours. Indeed, the missions are completed quickly, the investigation is easily resolved. Even if certain dimensions make us the Inception blow, namely the game in the game, the title is quickly finished. We clearly expected more challenge but above all more content. And it’s not the music playlist unlocked by finishing the intrigue that will change our minds. The game is beautiful and fun but rather limited in its density.

Another downside, the difficulty sometimes unbalanced on certain levels. We often find ourselves walking almost with eyes closed, entire sections of level without major obstacle to finally arrive at a particularly frustrating portion. Requiring good timing to chain movement phase and combat phase, this kind of moment crystallizes the whole challenge of the title but remains quickly exceeded. The most daring can try the perfect by redoing the levels several times in order to discover all the upgraded stones scattered here and there but after a while, the heart is no longer there. Even if humor is in this title, and the characters rather endearing, the final impression tends towards disappointment. Hopefully a next installment will expand the field of possibilities!
