wii sports resort game review
Test: Wii Sports ResortAt the end of 2006, Wii Sports supported Wii to promote innovative gameplay intended to attract the favor of the general public. Almost three years later, the title returns with a Resort version, this time for a fee. Its objective is to prove the progress of motion recognition via Wii Motion Plus.
Despite its meager content and the small weaknesses it conceded in terms of accuracy, Wii Sports has been and still is a title that holds a special place in the hearts of multiplayer enthusiasts. Difficult to spend an evening with others on the Nintendo console without releasing the DVD of Wii Sports, provided free of charge with the machine and providing moments of laughter, chambering and challenges of all kinds. Only here, of the 5 events on the wafer, only two of them were successful enough to last long: golf and bowling. Nintendo was not mistaken and made these two pioneers of the Wii Sports series the only disciplines also at the rendezvous of Resort. To these were added 10 other sports, combat, aquatic, ball, precision, "mechanical" ... A mix at first sight attractive since rather varied and not necessarily based on the most popular practices than we get stuck at each party game. If we add to this a more exotic setting (the Miis land on a tropical island), Resort presents itself under the best auspices.
Resort is therefore a more complete, prettier, deeper and more varied version of Wii Sports, the first of its name. In other words, from the state of a simple demo, we go to a real title, hence the need to pay almost € 50 to acquire it. A sum which will be paid voluntarily insofar as the Wii Motion Plus, sold € 20 alone, is provided in a pack with the game. Playable alone and with others (from two to four players depending on the disciplines, simultaneously or each Resort) has twelve different sports: saber, wakeboard, Frisbee, archery, basketball, table tennis, personal watercraft, canoeing, cycling, games aerial and finally golf and bowling. Like the first Wii Sports, some disciplines quickly established themselves as being the most fun, others on the other hand, seem to have been less worked and therefore bring much less satisfaction. Anyway, all benefit from the gain in precision brought by the Wii Motion Plus. If the accessory does not revolutionize the genre, it is clear that it brings both more sensations and challenge. It is easy, for example, while trying your hand at golf, to find that a swing made in a hurry will not give birth to a good throw whereas Wii Sports was not very demanding with regard to this movement that you could even do while seated. Already very nice, golf is becoming immersive and demanding. Compare the two, you will understand very quickly. Bowling has probably not progressed as much but remains as realistic as ever.
Among the richest titles and which make the most of Wii Motion Plus, we can cite the saber. The Iaïdo for example, which consists in cutting all kinds of objects from side to side (a bamboo, an orange, a log of wood ...) proves that the small appendage recognizes your movements with a degree of precision quite impressive. It is thus possible to cut an object in a thousand ways, right in the middle, by removing only a tiny part of its ends, askew, in one direction as in the other ... In short, the demonstration hits the bull's eye. This is somewhat less the case when we look at "mechanical" or "vehicle" sports. If wakeboarding (a mixture of water skiing, surfing and snowboarding, known to lovers of extreme sports) lets itself be taken in hand and turns out to be the most classic in its operation (the Wiimote acts as a spreader that is held firmly), not everyone has this profile. Canoeing, for example, which requires holding the Wiimote like a paddle and rowing alternately left and right in order to progress in a straight line sometimes struggles to recognize this alternation. Suddenly, in racing, paddling quickly becomes complicated and it is not uncommon to see your avatar slide towards the outside of the course without your approval. Same observation on the bike where the pedaling is done by swinging alternately and in rhythm the Wiimote and the Nunchuk. The effect is not obvious and we have all the difficulties in combining this mechanism with that which consists in orienting the two accessories to the left or to the right so as to be able to double for example. Finally, personal watercraft presents itself as a fairly pleasant mechanical sport since you have to hold the Wiimote as you hold the handlebars of a jet ski.
There is also another category of sports, those which are quite playable and well calibrated but which offer no more sensations than the competition. Topping the list is table tennis. While being fluid and receptive to the slightest of our attempts to put a little effect in a ball, it is a little too slow and assisted to prevent the leveling of the values of the two players. Not easy to accelerate the exchange or to offset your opponent, the displacements being managed by the AI ... So, if we have fun, it is not by practicing table tennis that the you can really measure your level with that of another human. We can then associate it with archery which adopts an almost identical profile. Perfectly thought out, original from the position to be adopted, very close to that of an archer, it is nonetheless very simple, to the point that we master long distance shots fairly quickly. Once the vagaries of the wind are taken into account and the distance is well appreciated, the player only has to bend his bow and aim in the heart of the target, without risking his shot going into a spin if he has a little too much moved. In a similar vein, basketball convinces and disappoints according to the discipline selected. The shooting sessions at 3 points are relatively well done since they impose on the player a fairly precise timing and whose success ultimately depends on little. On the other hand, in three-against-three, this discipline is sorely lacking in interest since it is semi-automated and in the end, completely restrained by the impossibility of taking the slightest rebound.
Finally, the big strength of Wii Sports Resort is to be less stingy in derivatives of disciplines than its predecessor. In total, there are therefore more than twenty events, some of which focus more on direct confrontation and others on individual performance as such. Thus, it can be enjoyed solo as well as multi, especially as the level of AI increases with your experience. The principle of EXP points has indeed been preserved so that a diligent player can see the difficulty of the events going hand in hand with his playing time in Resort. Conversely, your first steps are quietly facing a poorly performing AI. The target of Nintendo, namely all players, from 7 to 77 years old, will appreciate. She will also appreciate seeing the right / left-handed option offered in each discipline, in order to avoid an often painful adaptation time. Everything is therefore planned to have fun without worrying. However, we would not have said no to a few additional disciplines in order to fill the void left by other fairly anecdotal sports, such as Frisbee or aerial games, not frankly ideal or motivating in the context of multiplayer games. We can also rail against the absence of an online multiplayer. If it is complicated to blame Wii Sports Resort too much, which relies above all on the friendliness of the thing, challenging other players online would not necessarily have been luxury.
The notes
Graphics 14/20
Miis discover a more colorful and less sanitized universe than in Wii Sports. As a result, the atmosphere is warmer and the decor more varied, which contrasts with the relative sobriety of the first opus.
Gameplay 16/20
The level of pleasure is quite uneven from one discipline to another and many players will probably tend to focus on only a large half of the 12 sports offered. The contribution of Wii Motion Plus, which varies according to the discipline, is fairly clear and easily proves that the recognition of Wii movements has made great progress for almost three years.
Lifetime 12/20
Twelve sports playable solo or up to 4 for a total of 24 different events, this is significantly more than in Wii Sports first name. It remains a bit just to hope to come back again and again. In this sense, an online multiplayer could perhaps have launched a hunt for the record not devoid of any interest.
Soundtrack 12/20
As in the previous section, the soundscape has little effect on the rest of the game. We use the same sound effects and little music that accompanies the menus, always as Zen.
Scenario/
Wii Sports Resort is a worthy successor to its predecessor in that it is superior to it at almost all levels. Wii Motion Plus has played an important role in this progression, without revolutionizing the party game. However, we take pleasure in discovering new disciplines and above all, enjoying less random gameplay. This is a new benchmark for multiplayer enthusiasts.
