Test: Counter Strike: Global Offensive - When the dean of modern FPS gets a makeover

More than 6 years after its release, Counter Strike: Global Offensive has no more reputation to be made and its evolution was the testimony of the adaptability of the teams in charge of its development. 19 years after the very first version made available to players, what has become the rough diamond of the FPS, on which so many names have been made and thanks to which so many players have learned to love competition and the strategic thrill that characterizes matches on this emblem of online gaming. After having undergone its most substantial modification in recent weeks, embodied by a free to play passage and the introduction of Danger Zone, the title's Battle Royale mode, a new inventory is needed in order to enlighten anyone who would like to know what has become of this title that people under the age of twenty ... sometimes find it difficult.

SIGNIFICANT CONTENT DEVELOPMENTS

The main shortcoming of the Global Offensive version was from its earliest days the cruel lack of content. Where CS: Source had a knack for highlighting a multitude of map modifications accessible to insiders, Global Offensive started with a rather weak number of activities available. Six years later, this shortcoming is fortunately corrected and the title offers a very wide range of game modes, from competitive to occasional (for the classic formula opposing anti-terrorist and terrorist around hostages or bombs) in including the death match (where scoring is the only goal) or the War Games, made up of popular variants within the modding community. These modes were joined in 2017 by Wingman, an intimate 2V2 version of classic objective maps. More recently, Danger Zone joined the title, a Battle Royale which we will talk about later in this test.

Of course, the classic Counter Strike maps are still there, joined by a slew of new maps such as Overpass, Mirage, Cache, or Austria, Biome, Subzero, Agency for community maps “validated” by Valve. In "occasional", there are playlists with a rolling map so that everyone can find their way around, even those who only play Dust2 since a playlist is dedicated to it, which is quite funny. Jeux de Guerre has its own maps, created as often symmetrical arenas. Formerly composed of two or three maps, they now include a dozen maps, usable on Arms Race, Demolition or on the Flying Sniper variant which uses the principle of ScoutzKnivez maps.

REGULAR GRAPHIC REDESIGNS AND FEATURE ADDITIONS

In terms of ergonomics and graphic coating, CS: GO very quickly knew how to pick up the pace, transforming its user interface in abundance and knowing how to update its graphics during its first years to stay in touch despite the competition. Clean, legible, practical and well thought out, today's Global Offensive has very little to do with the work released in August 2012 and many maps have been updated. The Steam workshop is also integrated into the experience, which makes it easier for players wishing to try out maps generated by the community and which, Valve is well aware of, are a real gold mine if we are looking for originality. There you will find Surf maps, Western coop maps, De_Rats emblematic of the 1.5 / 1.6 period and other Iceworld or AimMap. However, the biggest traffic of Counter Strike Global Offensive is no longer around the maps, but skins ...

A FLOWERING MARKETPLACE

Introduced a few years after the initial release, the inventory of CS: GO allows the player to exchange conventional weapons for customized, reskinned or totally different versions, like the Revolver R8 which can replace the Desert Eagle, where MP5 SD, which replaces the MP7. To win skins, you just have to play, and unlock lootboxes using keys sold between 90 cents and 2.20 €, a practice that can be criticized, especially on a game that used to be paid for, especially since 'It generates a veritable parallel market where certain weapons coatings are sold for more than $ 1,000. On the ethical side and addictive drifts of the video game transformed into a money game, we will come back. Now free to play, this slightly abusive practice of the lootbox is going a little better with the community, especially since it welcomed the arrival of the Battle Royale mode, here called Danger Zone.

DANGER ZONE: MUCH MORE THAN A SIMPLE BR?

Named Danger Zone in French, Danger Zone is an intimate BR, with a maximum of 15 players, in which everyone has to survive to win first place by surviving their opponents. Weapons and equipment are scattered around the map, which is large enough for 15 players, and you will sometimes need some tools to open the precious crates and devices allowing you to always have more money on hand. With the money, you just need to open your touchscreen tablet to order a weapon, which will be delivered by drones (if no one steals it from you) within a few tens of seconds. The arrival of the drone will obviously reveal your position and it is sometimes wise to follow the vehicles to hunt its prey. Flexible, rather varied in its tasks and accessible to all, Danger Zone is a perfect balance between classic matches and the Battle Royale with “small committee”, which is completed in about twenty minutes.

It is enough to make 3 or 4 parts in a row to realize that the title, through this BR variant, offers a very open angle, where the objects found have a real impact on the short-term objectives that we settle down. For example, finding a secure suitcase grants you a target (marked on your map) whose elimination brings in 500 dollars, a tidy sum that will allow you to have a Scout rifle delivered, a decisive element that allows you to manage duels at great distance and will therefore offer an additional chance to survive the next clashes. Maybe you want to spend this money to improve your tablet and better anticipate the progression of the red zone. In short, you will understand, this BR CS: GO adopts an original formula and particularly suitable for short sleeves which are rarely alike. In short, Danger Zone is what CSGO players lacked for quickly acquired thrills.

Good points
Excellent and extensive content (maps and game modes) for competitive, casual and creative players
Danger Zone, a very good Battle Royale: short, varied and engaging
An inventory system that allows arsenal customization and greater flexibility
Old school gaming sensations, without fuss, but still as effective
Non-binding free to play model
Regular and massive updates which allow an exemplary longevity

Negative points
We would have appreciated a more populated BR (current limit set at 15 per part)
The business of lootboxes and the marketplace, ethically very questionable ...
Cheat in Classified Game on "non-prime" versions (free version)

Counter Strike: Global Offensive is, more than six years after its release, a finished product, refined, perfectly legible and endowed with old-school sensations modernized over the months. Tailored for eSports through its competitive pole, highlighting the work of the community, listening to the genres that work, CS: GO offers free a myriad of ways to exploit the gameplay easy to handle but complex to master the Counter Strike formula, which has dominated the FPS for almost 20 years now. An excellent success, which however did not start with the best philosophy at its launch in 2012.
