Video game test. The Sims 4: It's the story of life!
Released on PC in 2014, The Sims 4 life simulator is now back on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Prepare to ... control a family!

The Sims series was started in 2000. After allowing players to control an entire city (in the Sim City series), developer Maxis then offered the possibility of focusing on an individual or a family. In other words on a "Sims".

The franchise is now in its fourth numbered episode. And after a long-awaited release on PC in 2014, the title published by Electronic Arts is finally brought to current consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). It has been available since November 17.

What is a Sims?
The Sims 4 is a life simulation game. In other words, your first task will be to create your avatar, or "Sims". Man or woman ? Thin or plump? Little or big ? Glasses or not? Merry or grumpy? Sportsman or backpacker? ... You also have a large wardrobe to be fashionable. Summer or winter collection, evening dress or Darth Vader's costume ... You are spoiled for choice.

You just have to start the game by installing your Sims in his new house. By choosing to spend the starting 20,000 Simflouzes (the local currency) in a furnished flat, or to build your home from A to Z.

The principle of the game is to simulate the daily life of your avatar. Find a job and climb the ladder, sleep, eat, take breaks in the WC, have fun, build a social life, get married, have children, go to work, organize a party, pay bills… All aspects of daily are taken into account. And this over several generations, since your starting Sim ages, and dies. The adventure then continues with his descendants.

And things get complicated when all of these parameters influence each other. You are less efficient in your work if you have not slept enough or if an urgent desire arises. And your "seduction" capital takes a hit if you haven't showered for three days ...

Conversely, having cultural activities (painting, music, etc.) develops your skills and makes you more creative. Your boss should appreciate it, and so will your bank account.

The principle of the “sandbox” game
The Sims 4 is what we call a sandbox game (or Shakespeare’s language). In other words, apart from the objective of succeeding in your life, the game does not impose any path, no direction on you ... but offers hundreds of objectives. You have the freedom to do what you like, when you like! (Be careful though: too much absenteeism at work can ruin your career).

You live your adventure at your own pace, carrying out the many possible actions whenever you want. The only limit is your budget, which fluctuates according to your expenses and your earnings.

Therefore, it is impossible to gauge the "lifespan" for such a game. Since, if you hang on to this Sims 4, maybe you will still be playing it in three years.

At any time, the player can switch from "life" mode to "construction" mode. The latter allows him to enlarge the house, add rooms, redo the paintings, add a more modern TV or a competition fridge ... Here too, the field of possibilities is very wide, with a huge palette of possibilities and objects to buy.

If the game of Maxis is very pleasant to watch, the technique nevertheless shows some limits. Relatively long loading times, some display bugs, and slowdowns during the game, these are the small grains of sand in the cogs.

Some may also blame the player's overly pronounced passivity. Because paradoxically, there are so many things to do that you will not do everything: too busy working, eating, sleeping or changing the baby's diapers, your Sims will not always be available to fulfill your orders (or in good condition do it).

Who is the game for?
The Sim’s 4 is classified Pegi 12. In other words, the small "Pan-European Game Information" logo does not recommend it for children under 12. In particular because of scenes referring to sex (the command "to make crack-crack", or "to make a baby" which allows you ... to extend the family). Although the game nevertheless addresses this aspect (and everything that happens in the bathroom) with modesty, and with a lot of mosaics to hide any scenes of (semi) nudity. You'll never see a shocking scene in The Sims 4.

For its colorful, fun and addictive side, The Sims 4 has everything to seduce children, who will find the virtual version of the "dollhouse"!

As long as you respect the PEGI classification, which aims just. Because although it is generally very accessible with practice, The Sims 4 uses commands that may seem complicated to under 12s. Not to mention some more adult issues that might elude them.

There remains the public of fans (adults), who will find here the most complete and richest version of the franchise. The Sims 4 quickly becomes addictive, and risks making you spend a few sleepless nights.

As for each episode, the gameplay of the Sims 4 will be subject to debate, between the purists of the PC version who swear by the keyboard and the mouse, and the "consolers" who will compose with a maneuverability which requires, it is true, a time of adaptation. They will however appreciate to find here a portage faithful to its elder on computers.

In conclusion
As you would expect! If you're a fan of the simulations genre, The Sims 4 is the hit you've come to expect. With an incredible wealth and an almost infinite lifespan, you will love to play voyeurs in this virtual "reality TV", deliberately filmed in the second degree by its creators.

Purists of the license will however criticize this “consoles” version for a game far removed from its predecessor on PC. Because much less ergonomic with the joystick than with the keyboard and the mouse. A matter of habit! And with a little practice, this console version of The Sims 4 is a must. Attention, this game is a real vacuum cleaner of free time!

The +:

A pretty pretty game to watch
Sims language and facial expressions are still funny
A fun game, full of references and second degree
Hundreds of items available
Huge amount of things to do, huge lifespan
The - :

Slightly long loading times
A basic version (but some additional content released on PC can be purchased on the download stores of your consoles)
The controller is not always well suited
Too often the player seems to be passive
