Yo-kai Watch 3 game Review

Yo-Kai Watch 3: A good conclusion for the series on 3DS

The time for double and even triple versions seems to be over for Yokai-Watch. The third installment of the traditional episodes of the series arrives in Europe in a single version, more than 2 years after having taken its first steps in Japan. If he knew how to improve thanks to his second version, the third offers a breath of fresh air to the license and knew how to charm us from his first moments.

While Yo-Kai Watch 4 is still awaited on Switch in Japan at the time of writing, its predecessor comes to close the long common history between Nintendo 3DS and the franchise. To conclude this narrative arc, it is no longer one, but two characters that you can embody in two different cities ... And even two different continents.

US AND CUSTOMS

In addition to our classic hero, you will also have to control a young woman. The interest in the approach comes from the initial move of your avatar to the USA, while our heroine allows you to continue to roam the now usual city of Granval. This choice opens the way to two scenarios, also different, which sometimes overlap and will regularly require you to switch from one point of view to the other. The result is convincing since it offers a dynamism that was sometimes lacking in the series, and turns out to be a good pretext to justify the arrival of new characters, a new city and new Yokais. The whole is sublimated by a substantial number of cut scenes and good production ideas, ranging from a soundtrack adapted to an almost full dubbing on the cut scenes in question, passing by different camera choices according to the areas explored. .

If it is thought for a young audience, Yo-Kai Watch 3 has the merit of touching on a number of themes in its main adventure, including around supernatural elements, which we might not have imagined as present. Beyond the sequences centered around zombies or UFOs, the title also surprises by its capacity to deal with more classic themes without taking itself too seriously, but remaining delicate on some potentially more sensitive. Enough to make it an ideal production for a young audience, who will appreciate the general tone of the adventure.

COME TO MY BOX

The other important change in this opus is the introduction of a major innovation in the combat system. Finished the wheel, it is now a grid of 9 boxes that acts as a field for your Yokai. At regular intervals, you can move them and take advantage of their positions to either dodge an enemy attack, or protect one of your friends by placing another Yokai in front of it. Objects and bonuses also appear on the grid, making travel even more necessary to take advantage of the bonuses distilled here and there. Without necessarily making the whole much more complex, this new mechanic has the merit of offering even more interactions and actions in combat by making the confrontations against the bosses more pleasant to play, especially since the latter arrive again to offer one or two new elements in each confrontation to vary the pleasures. We still regret that the mini-games used to trigger the ultimate are still so few and without huge interest, but the introduction of the box system offers at least other elements to manage during the clashes.

MINI-GAMES, MAXI PLEASURE

In terms of mini-games, precisely, apart from those concerning fights, the title turns out to be rather inspired and offers a good number of ideas which help to regularly renew the adventure. Finishing your meal by pressing the appropriate buttons at the right time, engaging in bicycle racing, or mounting an object with the right combination of keys are among the varied list of mini-games that await you. They are rarely repeated, and without being particularly innovative in terms of gameplay, are enough once again to bring dynamism and variety to your journey. If you add to it the research of Yo-Kai, the fishing and the capture of insects, without forgetting the different side quests according to the characters taken in hand, you get a title always as consistent in terms of lifespan.

The notes
+ Positive points
Less repetitive progression
Two characters, two different cities to explore
New features in the combat system
Top level of achievement for 3DS
A light and funny scenario, pleasant to follow

-Negative points
The difficulty gap between boss and base fights
The lack of variety of mini-games triggering the ultimate

Yo-Kai Watch 3 has the good idea to correct a large part of the faults of its predecessors, offering on the one hand a pleasant scenario and imbued with dynamism thanks to the possibility of switching between two characters with distinct red threads, and on the other share a slightly redesigned combat system that is gaining interest in the occasion. Add to this an always neat realization, and you get a title that retains only a few faults from its previous experiences, which do not weigh very heavy in the face of the many advantages of this third edition.
