Making calls with Whatsapp: how does it work?

A newcomer to the VOIP services market, WhatsApp challenges Skype and Viber by offering its users to make free calls using either a WiFi network or their Data subscription.

Like Skype, WhatsApp now allows you to make voice calls to friends without having to use the credit on your SIM card.

Accessible only to Android smartphone owners for the moment (the update will be deployed later on iPhone and Windows Phone), the feature allows you to call any contact who has already updated their application by pressing the new button. 'call, which appears on the right, next to the name of the contact in a conversation. Very easy to use, the functionality is broadly based on the concept of Skype, with some barriers. For example, it is not possible to call a mobile or landline number, since the service only calls another user's WhatsApp account and the US company does not yet offer a paid service. Likewise, there is currently no question of seeing your correspondent using the front camera of your smartphone for a videochat.

During a call, WhatsApp displays only the contact's photo, as well as three action buttons, which allow you to control the volume, send a handwritten message or mute the microphone.

During the half-dozen calls made to test the service, we noticed that the quality of the calls was very variable, both over 4G and over WiFi.

Very limited in terms of functionality, and not yet very stable, WhatsApp's call service is far from unanimous. However, we can bet that the service will improve with the updates.

No more premium rate calls for calls to Europe

Good news, however. Roaming charges no longer apply for mobile calls from Europe. This means that you can call from Germany or Italy without paying more and the calls are included in your plan as if you were calling from France. The calls received are also free of charge for you. Please note, this only concerns phone calls and does not apply to internet use.

Indeed, whether within the European Union or in another country, Internet use may be deducted from your plan. Different options exist.

Your operator can bill you for each piece of data consumed abroad (the amount of information you send or receive and not the time spent on the Internet).
It can also provide for a data quota not to be exceeded abroad.
The options applied by your operator may vary by country. To find out more, you must consult your contract.
