Resident Evil 4 HD: The best console version?

To say that the development of Resident Evil 4 was tormented is an understatement. Just like Resident Evil 2, abandoned to a 65% finalized version, the title was modified several times before being released on Gamecube. Designed by the father of the series, Shinji Mikami, it was the subject of a temporary exclusivity on the Nintendo console, before being adapted for PlayStation 2. For many, Resident Evil 4 represents the quintessence of the game. action, while bringing survival-horror to a level rarely reached. Beautiful to die for, endowed with a captivating storyline and designed with a hellish rhythm, the adventure of Leon Kennedy literally overturned the industry when it was released. In recent months, the Capcom saga has been the subject of an avalanche of remasterings and Resident Evil 4 is therefore timely to close the wave of portages. With the weight of age, is Mikami's game still as fantastic? The answer in the following test.

Six years have passed since the atomization of Racoon City and Leon S. Kennedy is no longer a police blue. At 27, the hero gained recognition and he became one of the best secret agents of the American government. The President's daughter, Ashley Graham, has been kidnapped by a small group and the only hope of the young lady's father is to entrust the mission to the survivor of Racoon. His investigations lead him into the depths of the Spanish countryside, into a village lost in the depths of a forest. Then accompanied by two local police, he will quickly realize the immensity of the task to be accomplished ...

NEW OUT OF OLD

If there is one thing that cannot be removed from Resident Evil 4, it is its atmosphere. By reinventing the series, the developers have bet to replace the zombies with villagers with rites from another time and the recipe works immediately. In terms of rhythm and staging, Resident Evil 4 is always as addictive and we never get bored for a second, as the characters, the anthology sequences and the scenographic upheavals are linked. At the time, meeting the locals in the village laid the new foundations for the saga: real 3D sets (and no longer fixed), more open environments, aimed at the shoulder and perfect balance between action and survival horror. We had the feeling that all the elements had been refined to the extreme. Today, the whole is less spectacular and one can have an impression of "compartmentalization", the fault of certain small areas. To this, we must add vintage textures (yes, smoothed but vintage anyway) and a persistent aliasing which shows a certain laziness on the part of Capcom. But the biggest "shock" undoubtedly comes from the maneuverability of the game. The displacements and the aiming system really exude caducity. Besides the impossibility of running while shooting, you really have to fight with the camera in hot moments and Leon constantly feels like he has a broom stuck in the foundation. It therefore takes a little time to adapt, including for people who discovered the game in 2005, but the effort is worth the effort. The U-turn, on the other hand, is damn useful, especially when faced with creatures like El Gigante.

AN EXCEPTIONAL GAME

Arriving on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Resident Evil 4 also has the good idea of offering fluidity at all times (in 60 frames per second), while eradicating the original loads. Everything is instantaneous - or almost - and this comfort is an undeniable plus. Side options, we also appreciate the possibility of deactivating motion blur. These are just details but these adjustments allow the game not to pester too much against its wrinkles. Despite its wanderings, the Capcom title remains an essential and we can only envy the players who have never done it and who will be able to discover it in its best light. The Illuminados, the gigantic bosses, the charismatic protagonists ... Leon's crazy adventure has some big surprises in store for you. And if the solo is not enough for you, know that all the additional content (from old remasterings) is present. So, apart from the new outfits and weapons, you can let off steam in The Mercenaries mode, which consists of defeating the villain in arenas, or try your hand at the ultimate difficulty mode. After fifteen hours spent in solo mode, you can also indulge in the Assigment Ada mission. All these treats do not change the face of the game but they complement an unforgettable main story.

The notes
+ Positive points
An exceptional game remains an exceptional game
Rhythm and staging
The ultra immersive atmosphere
1080p and 60 frames per second

Negative points
The aliasing party
Old fashioned gameplay
Textures from another era
Obviously less spectacular

Unless you have a CRT, relaunching Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube (or PlayStation 2) is not for everyone. For a small price, you can (re) discover the Capcom bomb, while enjoying 1080p and perfect fluidity. If it is undeniable that the game has aged on the technical level, it keeps for him a great atmosphere, grandiose fights and an intrigue which does not miss rebounding. His sense of rhythm and his narration demonstrate that the title was really ahead of its time. For this port, we would have liked a more marked facelift and the presence of an anti-aliasing but it is undoubtedly the best console adaptation to date. Therefore, if you have never done it or want to rediscover this myth of survival horror, do not be choosy and set off to conquer the secret of the Illuminados.
