MONSTER BOY AND THE KINGDOM OF CURSE, A BLESSING
Like Final Match Tennis, Windjammers or quite recently a certain Toki, France seems to have a privileged relationship with Wonder Boy, as evidenced by the parallel development of two projects related to the franchise. Because yes, this Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is indeed different from the remake of Dragon's Trap released last year at Dotemu.
Also incubated by the creator of the original Monster Worlds, Ryƻichi Nishizawa, this project started almost five years ago also intended to pay tribute to the series with a whole new episode "between tradition and modernity", without sacrificing anything in mind of recent Metroidvania. The result ? A little wonder.
The Dragon's Trap had left us on the side with its elegant pencils and its impeccable restoration of the gameplay of the time, without forgetting, icing on the cake, the possibility of zapping at any time between the original Master System engine and this skin of the fire of god signed Lizardcube. Monster Boy's magic trick is slightly different, but no less effective.
Much less 8-bit in its approach, this original creation aims to assimilate all the codes of the series to give it the most vibrant tribute, by multiplying the winks while modernizing the action-adventure mechanics typical of the ancients shutters.
This time we no longer sit at the neat remake table but at that of Metroidvania, a genre that the series already foreshadowed in its best episodes. And also one of the most crowded slots on the indie scene.
