Ethereal Review - Stay In Your Lane
ETHEREAL is a minimalist puzzle game developed and published by the Argentinian studio Nonsense Arts.A priori, it is the first game of the studio and, even if I have the impression of not having understood everything around ETHEREAL, the fact remains that I would like to be as talented as the creators of this game !
For classification, there is no doubt, it is a puzzle game. I have read that one player considered ETHEREAL to be an exploration game but, in this case, all games are exploration games! When I talk about minimalist, obviously it is not the game that is minimalist but rather the design. This is something that we can find in several puzzle games and, sometimes, the result is superb.
Introduction to ETHEREAL
Well, there is no story in this game, it's just a series of levels (24 in total) taking place in 4 different worlds.
I’m doing pretty well in puzzle games in general, but that’s not really the case there. I had to do the first four or five levels and then blocked, but blocked from home blocked. So I'm going to share with you what I had the opportunity to discover and for the rest, it will be up to you. Know that the mechanics are, a priori, different from one world to another in ETHEREAL.
In the levels I have had the opportunity to play, you control a kind of ball (not to say a task) that slides horizontally as long as there is no obstacle blocking the way and vertically, the ball can move only by jumping over an obstacle level (i.e. if the obstacle is thicker than normal, it is impossible to cross it or if it is empty) .
The goal is to open the lid of the diamond and once it is done, position itself on the opening and activate (by pressing SPACE) the passage to the next level. To activate the opening of the rhombus, there are small colored pellets that must be picked up (the reds together, the blue ones, etc.).
Some points around the game
The levels do not consist only of labyrinths, it would be boring too quickly. There are also switches, gates, etc. and these items are highlighted in bold in the arena where you are playing.
Sound plays an important role in ETHEREAL. I didn’t find which one, but one thing I’m sure is that the result is great.
For the integration of Steam elements, ETHEREAL has the successes and screenshots that work, when it comes to cards, this is not yet the case. The game is available in two different languages, but not French. You have to be content with English!
My conclusion
This indie game is pretty cool. He leaves on a good idea and the realization is of good quality. On the other hand, with only 24 levels, I find that the price is a bit high ... unless updates arrive later and we add levels until we reach the hundred!
So ? Of course I advise you to buy ETHEREAL in the Steam store, this game deserves it. If you are fair financially speaking, I advise you to add it in your wish list to know when it is on sale!
