Death's Gambit game Review - A Maddening Mission

Death's Gambit: What is this Dark Souls worth in 2D?

Driven by the wave of "Souls-like", Death's Gambit advocates precision combat in a medieval-fantastic 2D universe of the most beautiful effect. In keeping with the spirit of the Miyazaki saga, the adventure combines action, role-playing and platform for a morbid cocktail in the heart of Siradon. The product of three long years of gestation, White Rabbit’s work arrives with a bag full of ambition, whether technically or fun. Let's see together if the formula manages to confirm the positive impression of the first hours ...

In an end-of-the-world landscape, all is dead and desolation. Overlooking the heaped up bodies, the still lively flames hint at the drama that has just taken place. Facing Vrael, the knight Sorun - the only "survivor" of his squad - is distraught. While he takes the Vados path to warn the families, the man is stopped by Death. The evil entity offers him a pact: to resuscitate him so that the fallen man can offer him his services. As the blood runs out on the contract, the hero regains his envelope and his original skills, the adventure can begin!

PRESTIGE CLASS

Death's Gambit: What is this Dark Souls worth in 2D?
Before starting his long journey, the player has already gone through the creation of the soul defining the characteristics of the avatar. Each of the seven classes (Soldier, Assassin, Blood Knight, Magician, Noble, Sentinel and Death Acolyte) is divided into several categories: vitality, strength, finesse, endurance, intelligence, haste and fear. It is thus possible to create a character who is powerful and resistant or opt for a follower of long distance attacks and magic. It is essential not to neglect these preparations, otherwise you will quickly experience serious difficulties. Indeed, depending on the caste selected, the equipment changes and, above all, the soul energy (in other words magic spells) is granted in different ways. Depending on the case, it is obtained by counter-attacking, dodging, using a healing feather or blocking blows. So you have to make sure that Sorun's defensive and offensive approaches match your playing style. Once your protagonist is ready, it's time to cross paths with enemies who won't give you a minute's respite.

THE PACT CURSES

Hoping to one day find his mother, Sorun has decided to trust the Grim Reaper and finds himself in the shoes of an immortal condemned to repeat the fighting to find the flaws of increasingly formidable opponents. This approach, which is necessarily interesting in terms of gameplay, is also interesting from a scriptwriting point of view. During certain deaths, you will witness several flashback sequences shedding light on the hero's past acts. It doesn't change the common thread of the game, however it does give your pixel character more body and importance. Because it will see all the colors! Death’s Gambit relies on a sense of timing and each enemy it encounters requires a different approach, whether it be through a counterattack, a dodge and a powerful hit, or a ranged assault. Obviously, the size of the antagonists has an impact on the way of moving and operating. Like a “die and retry”, the title of White Rabbit does not spare the nerves but remains nevertheless accessible thanks to the feathers of Phoenix - acting as care - or to the shards, kind of artifacts allowing to climb level by resting near altars and other statues. These places, a backup platform, are positioned almost everywhere on the map and avoid stuffing yourself with long grind sequences. Death’s Gambit has no shortage of ideas, has an interesting bestiary and offers a great challenge. But that's without counting on certain disturbing elements ...

APPARATUS COSTUME

Despite its pretty retro plastic, Death’s Gambit unfortunately shows its limits in the ardor and the impact of the confrontations. The animations are, for the most part, quite average and we often have the unpleasant impression of embodying a clumsy character, who struggles to react with dynamism. The range of movements lacks scope and the heaviness of the movements (jumps!) Often proves to be troublesome in the progression. It’s heartbreaking because everything else in the game commands respect. Graphics, music, atmosphere and even level-design, everything is neat and makes you want to continue the adventure. The environments are a bit small, however, they erase this lack of space with a variety of moments. Where the title is less forgivable, however, is the profusion of bugs and crashes. We would also have liked the interface to be clearer. Presumably, and despite its undeniable qualities, Death’s Gambit would have deserved a few more months of development. This would have enabled him to attenuate the lack of punch in the confrontations (it is crying out against the bosses, it lacks sound impact and hindsight at the animation level) or to avoid him a “boss rush” syndrome a little too present. It is not bad, however, the whole lacks finish.

The notes
+ Positive points
Of great beauty
The musical atmosphere
The staging and the flashbacks
The different classes
Good challenge
The script and the dialogues

-Negative points
Recessed animations
The heaviness of the fighting
Bugs, crashes
Too small areas

What a pity ! Death’s Gambit is an adventure weighed down by a noisy finish and an annoyingly heavy gameplay. Sorun’s character is very classy but lacks liveliness and suffers from too limited a range of movements. If we add the messy interface, the too small areas and the bugs, it is undeniable that the game was released too early! It is nonetheless an interesting title, with a good challenge, however probably a little too ambitious.
