Test: Super Mario Bros. 3

It was in 1991 that our favorite plumber made his comeback on the living room console. After Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2, it's the third installment in the series, Super Mario Bros. 3, to reach the rank of the best NES games.

The scenario is simple: Bowser is back, accompanied by his seven children (Iggy, Roy, Larry, Morton, Lemmy, Ludwig Von and Wendy O), each having stolen a magic scepter from the King Mushroom. You once again embody the brave Mario, who has gone to fight the terrible Bowser and his family in order to liberate the World. You will have the choice to play alone or with a friend, knowing that the multiplayer mode has been changed. If in Super Mario Bros. the second player entered at the end of your game, here you will change places with your teammate at the end of each level. At the start of your adventure, you end up on a world map. Super Mario Bros. 3 is also the first game to offer this plan system, which will be repeated many times, as in the series of New Super Mario Bros on Nintendo DS and Wii. The progression in the levels, meanwhile, remains the same, since you will only have to advance fighting the enemies until the end of the course.

So far, the resemblance of the game to the first installment in the series is quite pronounced. But you will quickly realize that Super Mario Bros. 3 is full of lots of new things. The enemies of the original episode will still be present, but you will meet new ones, such as the children of Bowser. On the item side, you will find the emblematic mushrooms of the series, the invincibility star and the flower of fire, but six additional costumes will be available. You will therefore have hammer, tanuki, boomerang (only in the Gameboy Advance version), boot, frog and raccoon costumes. These costumes can for the first time be stored in a menu and then used when you need them most. The gameplay is extremely simple and requires no adaptation time, since you will only have to move Mario and make him jump to avoid the obstacles or to eliminate the numerous enemies. The presence of new costumes adds an even more attractive side to the game, since you will be able to execute a whole host of moves. For example, disguised as a raccoon, you can tail your enemies and even fly away, gaining incredible freedom of movement.

Another great novelty, the game is divided into eight worlds. There is the land of grass, the desert, the seaside, the big island, the sky, the ice, the pipes and the castle of the infamous Bowser. These worlds themselves have several levels, including a castle hosting an intermediate boss, and a second where one of Bowser's children will be waiting for you. The innovation is that they can all be replayed at any time during your game, since instead of going directly from one level to another, you will systematically return to the world map before going to the board following. The service life is therefore extended. Graphically, the game is a little wonder. If the decorations of Super Mario Bros. 1 were already very beautiful for the time, those of the third opus are even more pleasant to look at. Indeed, the levels are colorful, original and extremely diverse, since the eight worlds each have their own environment. Thus, you can admire superb aquatic levels, but also play in the desert, on the seaside or in the sky. The soundtrack is once again very successful. The music of Koji Kondo is numerous and always sticks perfectly to the universe of Super Mario Bros. They are now part of the most beautiful NES game melodies.

The notes
Graphics 17/20
The decorations are pleasant to look at, colorful and diverse. The characters are also very well modeled.

Gameplay 19/20
The gameplay is neat as in all Super Mario Bros. Despite the variety of shots available, the gameplay remains simple and effective.

Lifespan 16/20
The shortcuts to finish the levels faster are still present but in a reduced number. The lifespan can also be increased thanks to the possibility of restarting all the levels at will.

Soundtrack 19/20
The music of Koji Kondo is as beautiful, if not more, than that of Super Mario Bros. first of name, become cults all over the world. They still stick as well with the game world.

Scenario/
Super Mario Bros. 3 may not be the most cult game, but it is still the most successful in the Super Mario Bros. series. on NES, surpassing its two predecessors in all areas. Fans of oldies who have missed this opus must absolutely acquire it!
