Test: Space Invaders

Who would have thought that the oldest shoot in the world would one day appear on the most powerful portable console of the moment? Well, today it is the case with Space Invaders. The gameplay remains unchanged from the original version, but we still have as much fun destroying these rows of aliens ...

Although invented at the dawn of video games, the principle of Space Invaders is still extremely effective. You control a small ship from left to right at the bottom of the screen and must destroy the enemies that come upon you. Your opponents move tirelessly from left to right, going down a notch each time they meet the edge of the playing space. The more you eliminate, the faster they advance. But do not think that Taito was satisfied to carry on the last portable of Nintendo the original game, because some innovations come to be added to this adaptation Gameboy Advance. The first good surprise comes from the fact that you can improve your lasers by collecting bonuses. For example, you can destroy an entire row of aliens the first time by picking up the appropriate item. This improvement makes the game much more interesting than the original Space Invaders. The levels have also been brought up to date with for example the appearance of stages against bosses at the end of the level. The enemies encountered are much more varied which makes the software much more attractive than its ancestor.

Graphically, the game has benefited from a very nice makeover. We are far from the monochrome screen that fans of the early days know well! The game screen is colorful and the movements of your ship quite fluid, much more than in the original anyway. The explosion effects are successful and help to make the action more present. The soundtrack has also been reworked. The levels are linked together on planing and pleasant techno rhythms. The sound effects are in the spirit of a shooter game and we take real pleasure in destroying the rows of villains who descend on you.

The handling of the vessel is immediate and we are immediately immersed in the heart of the action. It must be said that the concept itself is so simple that you can only be comfortable with the handling. The real difficulty comes from enemy fire, but the precise control of the ship allows you to get out of all perilous situations. The link possibilities of the console have been exploited since two multiplayer modes have been planned. You will thus be able, accompanied by a friend, to face enemy lines in the "cooperation" or "competition" game options. This little extra lengthens the life of the software a little. Fortunately, the solo mode ends a bit quickly ... The possibility of saving your game at any time is certainly for a lot. That said, the developers had the good idea to integrate two levels of difficulty. If the first is affordable by the majority of players, the second makes the game much more difficult. The hard mode aliens are extremely more vicious than in the easy mode and it is only advisable for the most skillful of you!

The most nostalgic will be happy to learn that the very first version of the game has been integrated into the cartridge. Fun two or three games, this little bonus is quickly forgotten. Only true fans of the first hour will find their pleasure. In any case, we realize how much video games have evolved in the space of twenty years. To conclude, and despite what the youngest will say, it is clear that Space Invaders is still a good game. Admittedly the game itself may not be as impressive as current productions, but its Eye-catching gameplay and its handling could not be simpler, well worth a small place in your software library.

The notes
Graphics 13/20
We are far from what is best on GBA, but the game remains pleasant and generally neat. We appreciate the makeover of enemy aliens much more presentable today than in the very first version of the game.

Gameplay 15/20
The immediate handling and the classic gameplay that have already proven themselves provide this new Space Invaders with excellent playability.

Lifespan 13/20
The game ends fairly quickly, but style buffs will always come back to the game for "a little last game".

Soundtrack 13/20
Without being exceptional, the techno soundtrack pleasantly accompanies the game. The sound effects support the action well and give the software a very appreciable dynamism.

It's always nice to go back in time for a part of a historic video game like Space Invaders. Fans of this classic should appreciate the update of this hit from the past.
