Metal Gear Solid 3 review

TEST METAL GEAR SOLID 3

Let's be clear, despite its slight flaws, no game can compete with the intrinsic richness of Snake Eater. Why ? Quite simply because Metal Gear Solid 3 is not just a game. It is a life experience. Thus, during the twenty hours of play necessary for Snake to accomplish his mission, there will be so much to see, to discover, to perceive, to understand. The possibilities for pure action are immense, the gameplay much better balanced than in Metal Gear Solid 2, the depth of the scenario almost abysmal and the winks simply innumerable. When you play Metal Gear Solid 3, you have to share your experience, convey your visions, your feelings. It is by bringing all these elements together that Snake Eater becomes an incredible experience, capable of marking a player's life ... Hideo Kojima can bow out, the Metal Gear trilogy has just ended in apotheosis ... Solid

THE TEST

May 2000. MGS 2 created the event. Technical prowess and aesthetic mastery. In a single trailer, Kojima triumphed, enveloping Snake in a legendary whirlwind. 5 years later, MGS 3 revisits the roots of the saga and Kojima tries a daring bet: that of surprising us. One more time…

Soldier support is the # 1 priority.
Never say, "it can't be done."
Accept risk, and allow soldiers to make mistakes.
Know your soldiers' problems.
Exact high standards and lead by example.

Earn your keep - use initiative.
Acknowledge good deeds publicly; discipline privately.
Training is not only everything - it is the only thing.
Encourage employer and family interest and involvement.
Respect all soldiers, regardless of their rank.

Eat or be eaten. Hunt or be hunted

The 1960s. In the heart of the Cold War, the United States and Russia posed a terrible nuclear threat to the world. It is in this climate of extreme tension that Metal Gear Solid 3 decided to forge its legend ... that of Naked Snake! Sent by the Fox Hound, an American militia, the man is tearing apart the Russian sky. Its mission is clear: to melt into the Russian jungle and rescue Professor Nicholai Sokolov, inventor of the Shagohod, a formidable weapon of mass destruction! Fortunately to take up this challenge, Snake’s range of movements has been particularly large. Apart from the classy CQC (Close Quarter Combat) which will allow you to catch a soldier and choose between interrogating him, using him as a human shield, or killing him, you can take yourself for Tarzan by climbing some trees, before suspend yourself to target your enemies in deceit. It is also possible to crawl in subjective view in the tall grass, but also to stay stationary and shoot with one arm. But alongside infiltration, which is more demanding than ever, a "survival" dimension now occupies a preponderant place. Immersed in the jungle, you will have to camouflage yourself, feed yourself by hunting small game (be careful, your food may rot if you keep it too long in your bag), protect you from the cold and rain (otherwise you will get sick, your sneezing can betray you!), while obviously avoiding the aggressive rounds of Russian soldiers, sometimes accompanied by snappy watchdogs with refined smell (there are always two to three different ways of crossing an area). As you can see, Snake is no longer just fighting against armed enemies. He will also have to deal with hostile nature, bad weather, predatory animals. But the picture still seemed too idyllic for Hideo Kojima. So the Club Med atmosphere is over, here you have to fight to survive. Exit the radar which allowed you to locate your enemies at a glance (you will now have sonars running ... battery operated!). Finito, the rations that quickly restored life! Indeed Snake Eater now offers two vital gauges. If the first symbolizes your state of health (empty it means death), the second new presents your fatigue. The fluctuations of the latter will therefore have repercussions on your endurance, your sharpness in shooting, your recovery. And to fill it, only one way: hunting! And in this dark forest, you will have the choice of game that you can kill, capture alive to better keep it ... or even use it to scare your enemies! Snake eater he said ...

But let's go back to the main gameplay surprises of this Snake Eater. Surprises also directly inspired by Rambo and other Predators. Indeed, in order to immerse yourself in its environment perfectly, a camouflage index has appeared at the top right of the screen. No need to pretend to be Paco Rabanne to understand that the higher this percentage, the less likely the enemy soldiers will notice you. All that remains is to choose the right outfit and face paintings (some of which can be downloaded online!). Even stronger, Snake will now have to heal his war wounds himself! At the roots! Whether it is cuts, burns, broken bones or balls to be extracted, you will then have to go through the treatment menu to, manually, get back on your feet! However, the way in which this option was integrated remains a little light. Accessible at any time, even during a fight, it tends to break the rhythm appreciably ... without bringing something more delusional. Admittedly, between the camouflage sometimes a bit tedious to manage (the index fluctuates every 10 meters) and the care mode a little gadget, Metal Gear Solid 3 sometimes struggles to highlight its new ideas. But if these slight weaknesses are to be emphasized, the immersion remains so prodigious that they quickly pass into the background ...

Only the Snake is the true hero?

From the outset, the graphic impact is striking. Lush, warm and lively, the jungle, your new playground, instantly imposes its class! See during the night the shadow of the leaves cut out precisely on Snake's shoulders, admire the management of particles (splinters of wood during shoot sequences, sheaves of water from waterfalls ...), instantly calm! The PlayStation 2 is exhausted, clearly pushed to its limits. But the fact that some slowdowns are sometimes invited to this fun feast will not spoil the party as the universe of Metal Gear Solid 3 impresses with its variety, its attention to detail, the life that animates the flora and fauna of the place. High ferns from which birds gush at your approach, crawling snakes on the ground, rumblings of waterfalls, soft light of the sunset filtered by centenary trees ... As Hideo Kojima explains to us: "Our priority was to design a jungle that really looks like a jungle. It is a rather complex exercise because the density of places becomes essential to its credibility. The player will be able to move freely, there is no single path, rather a network of all interconnected passages which offer great freedom of movement. To achieve this we had to abandon the graphics engine of Metal Gear Solid 2, which is too specialized in indoor environments. We had to be able to display large areas. " You will cross a mountain, caves, Russian bases, swamps ... Rarely Metal Gear had not offered so many places and situations. A magnitude admirably highlighted during certain instantly cult clashes! Indeed, how not to cry out to genius during the snipe sequence opposing Snake to The End. Almost an hour of intense dueling, carpet in the forest. Quite simply unique, not to mention the dreamlike encounter with The Sorrow or the duel as epic, as aesthetic against The Boss, all underlined by the poignant soundtrack composed by the tandem Harry Gregson-Williams and Norihiko Hibino. Bosses may be, for the most part, seriously eccentric, their class and the intelligence of the fights they offer may well mark the history of video games. And yes, in all simplicity…

Psycho-rigid?

To thank us for having patiently waited (the game was released in late 2004 in the United States and Japan), our European version includes some new bonuses with variable interest. You will therefore find patriotic camouflages (put your face in the colors of England, France ...), a mode allowing you to confront all the bosses of the game, a Cinema mode offering the possibility of watching all the cutscenes (tchi-tchaaaaa ) and finally some additional levels for the mode "Snake against Monkeys" opposing Snake to the macaques of Ape Escape. But remains to define the target audience for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. And there, as much to admit, Metal Gear Solid 3 is not likely to shake the certainties which are passionate or annoyed. Did you like MGS? You will love Snake Eater! But if MGS 2 had fed you a little, sorry, this new episode will not reverse the trend. Snake Eater deserves it and that's why it doesn't seem dedicated to the general public! You don’t peck at it, you don’t get into an early hour game when you get home from work. No, here you have to immerse yourself in the length to perceive the real scope. Thus, unlike the Splinter Cell saga focusing above all on well-established gameplay, Metal Gear favors the atmosphere, sometimes unfortunately, to the detriment of rhythm and handling. There are so many possibilities that all the buttons on the controller are used for one or even two types of action. A little training will therefore be necessary before moving Snake to perfection, especially since the camera angles would have benefited from being improved. Indeed, the game retains its traditional top view, while a camera placed behind the shoulder (at the Splinter Cell or Resident Evil 4) would have been much better, especially in the absence of fixed radar! So we often plague when, after having done everything to heal our approach, we are flushed out by an enemy that the cameras had not spotted. Also incredible to have to deal with a view automatically switching to a subjective view imposed when you crawl in the tall grass! More flexibility in this area would not have been luxury!

For eternity…

If not perfect, Metal Gear Solid 3 has two qualities that make it unique. Its depth and class! Not to mention that, unlike a cold Splinter Cell, Snake Eater does not impose anything. It's up to you to bet on infiltration ... or to abuse your shotgun! You are free to spend hours in communication via Codec, or to chart your course without worrying too much about the scenario. You are free to use your entire palette of gadgets, or to master a single combat technique. Just know that each decision will affect the adventure, but also your feeling for the story. One certainty: Hideo Kojima keeps hammering out his convictions! Its historical theme, the transmission of genetic and cultural heritage, as well as the cruelly relative perception of good and evil. Thus, without turning a metaphysical touch evoked in MGS 2 into thinking, the scenario is furiously tortuous. As a result, you will not be surprised to learn that Snake is blaming a little, a lot, passionately. The first 5 hours of play are therefore a real test. Either you will definitely drop the pad, stuffed by the complexity of the handling and the avalanche of cutscenes, or you will fully adhere to this universe oscillating between the historical and the spooky, between action and introspection. Whichever you choose, just know that the rhythm will continue to intensify and that between the shock sequences, the reversals in abundance and the ambivalent characters flirting between angels and divine vipers, it is certain, you will enter an adventure with rare energy. Especially since here, despite appearances, there is nothing Manichean about the universe. Each character has a rich background leading them to evolve psychologically over the course of the adventure. Some will touch you, others will annoy you, none will leave you numb.
