Test: Halo

Appearing clearly as the spearhead of the Xbox Halo makes a remarkable entry on the new Microsoft console but also in the world of FPS. A title that has not failed to make many players drool since the announcement of its development and which could well prove to be a real killer-app of the Xboite.

While thousands of PC players were waiting for it at the turn, it is therefore finally on the console of the American giant that we discover Halo. The fabric of this adventure takes place in a futuristic universe where men far from their home planet wage a merciless war against an alien race known as the Covenant. In the midst of this conflict it is in the shoes of Master Chief that you will have the opportunity to illustrate yourself by saving your species. Hyper-trained combat unit and real killing machine you are pulled from your cryogenic sleep to plunge you directly into the action. Your ship is in the grip of an alien invasion, adjustment of the aim of your helmet, by a professor and zou it is unarmed (therefore naked like a worm) that you launch out in the corridors of the ship to quickly equip yourself with the gun that is going well and causing country to the Covenant. Many places to visit will then follow, whether indoor or outdoor in sometimes immense levels. The gameplay will also hold some surprises since if most of the title comes in the guise of a pure and hard FPS, driving different vehicles will also be allowed.

Let's not make the suspense last longer, Halo is simply a remarkable title. It is first of all visually that we take a big hit with simply impressive environments. The levels are particularly vast, alternating the decorations, the atmospheres and the lighting effects with a surprising realism. The textures are of their exceptional quality and a flick of the flashlight on the walls will allow you to take full advantage of the miracles with particularly well-done effects. The set also remains perfectly fluid even when the colorful shots of the aliens fuse in all directions and that of course you do not fail to give the reply, alone or accompanied. Another major element in Halo, a level of A.A quite well developed and which will be the occasion for a lot of surprises. We are therefore witnessing unexpected scenes such as the alien who throws himself on the ground when you throw a grenade, the one who hides behind the trees, the other who hunts up his friends or the one who hides like a coward behind his shield.

A sensitive point in this title, the gameplay. I announce it clearly I am generally not a fan of console shoots as the comfort of the mouse and keyboard seems to me incomparable with that of a pad with this type of game. The handling is here simply disconcerting of efficiency and you stay with the huge lever grafted on your hands without losing a single crumb of the action. Just driving certain vehicles is sometimes painful in confined spaces. We therefore go from missions to missions, fulfilling the different objectives proposed in each level. There are different weapons to use and very interestingly, it is possible to prick those of enemies. Their firepower is variable and some sometimes particularly ridiculous in the face of alien waves. There is also a restriction on the equipment level which allows only two weapons at a time. Besides the purely FPS part and as we said above, it is also allowed to drive different vehicles. Jeep, Tank, Hovercraft or even a ship that will allow you to vary the gameplay a bit even if their maneuverability is sometimes confusing.

In short, if we knew that Microsoft had many hopes in this title we understand better why. Halo should undoubtedly be positioned as one of the major references in terms of console FPS. We talked about it a lot before its release and we should continue after it is so absolutely remarkable.

The notes
Graphics 17/20
A marvel of effects, plays of light and decor. We take full advantage, the loading times are ridiculous, the levels immense and we see no flagrant slowdown ... of the ball to speak Djeunz! That said, it is not yet known if the Xbox says its last word here in terms of performance.

Gameplay 18/20
Solid and varied gamplay, not limited to the single player campaign. The handling is almost flawless for an FPS console, only vehicles are sometimes difficult to handle. We are simply drawn to this title and it is with difficulty that we manage to stop playing it.

Lifespan 16/20
A solid solo campaign but also a multiplayer mode particularly impressive by the types of games it offers by admitting up to 16 players.

Soundtrack 17/20
Neat effects and music that punctuate the action both sparingly and effectively. It remains to be hoped that the French version offers as good a rendering of voices as the U.S version which has reached us.

Scenario 15/20
The thread of this adventure is fascinating even if everything remains fairly classic, Halo wants to be a title from which it is difficult to get out once it has been launched.

An extraordinary FPS on console as you would expect. Halo is a remarkable title in many ways, we understand that it was the object of all Microsoft's attention for the launch of its new console as the little guys at Bungie were torn apart on this one!
