Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 review

Test: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

After the quality of the second installment of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on PSX, we could not wait for the PC version impatiently. So here she is finally pointing the tip of her trucks to take us even higher.

Here is the second version of an almost legendary title that we expected to get off the ground on PC. Tony Hawk indeed arrives in great shape on our machines, bringing with him his procession of novelties and improvements. Enough to send myself up in the air, if I can use the expression, since this title will offer parks more delusional than each other, destinations more varied than before but above all, mind-blowing gameplay and graphics of a fluidity to fall backwards. In short, just arrived at the intro and the presentation, we are already drooling on his keyboard and this is only the beginning.

Roughly speaking, nothing very different between this PC version and the one already published on PSX. The game modes are exactly the same, as are most of the options available. So you choose your own skateboarder, going from the definition of your ethnic group, your hair color and your type of outfit, to then go to the board which of course will also have its share of modifications. Each character benefits from different statistics and tricks with the possibility, of course, of improving everything as they progress. In principle, we participate in free courses or training in "free ride" or, we choose to go back and forth career mode, which will offer you to earn money and access the set of levels, each time taking up a certain number of challenges. It's up to you to collect the outstanding letters, to realize some more than acrobatic figures or to discover the hidden areas. Enough to have fun and constantly revive the desire to master make the many play areas complete.

But how could such a title achieve such ambitions with maneuverability worthy of a tank simulation? Fortunately, Tony Hawk's 2 is absolutely nothing. Even playing the keyboard is a pleasure as everything is pleasant to handle. The figures, although complex and varied, are a delight in their execution and one likes to climb higher and higher or to try the impossible by mixing in this debauchery of jumps, combos as optimistic as spectacular. Skaters therefore respond to the finger and the eye but also adapt their figures according to the elements of the decor they use to achieve them. Each trick also evolves by means of the directional keys to trigger combinations or even make the figure more spectacular and therefore yielding more points. In terms of parks, in addition to the diversity already present, the title offers the possibility of creating your own levels using the editor. The lifespan of this software should therefore explode completely, especially in view of the possibilities of sending your creations via the internet or even getting those of others.
In terms of graphics, it borders on delight, the Playstation already gave Tony Hawk a good glow, but there, it is clear that the game takes its full extent. The level of detail is quite satisfactory, the fluidity essential to the category is just as good and we operate in large areas with well-modeled skaters. Only the replay mode seems to admit somewhat the weaknesses of this title and the rest is simply a treat. The soundtrack for its part is very good, mixing good effects with the music of Rage Against The Machine, Anthrax and many others.

After waiting all this time, skate lovers are finally entitled to their title, and not least, since Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 should be a milestone in the history of board sports games. This app is indeed a mine in many respects combining thunder gameplay with impeccable achievement.

The notes
Graphics 17/20
Very good graphics thanks to the powerful engine and the finesse of the textures, to which are added beautiful decorations.

Gameplay 16/20
An easy grip even on the keyboard and a maneuverability which allows a great pleasure of play.

Lifespan 16/20
An impressive lifespan thanks to the editor and the possibility of importing new skateparks.

Soundtrack 16/20
A soundtrack at the height of this title offering good effects but especially music sticking perfectly to the style.

A success that should live up to the expectations of many fans. An addictive and fun game that should delight players of all stripes.
