Suikoden 2

The Japanese-style RPG is expanding with a new title. This type of game which seems to become a category in its own right is therefore enriched by the second opus by Suikoden to offer us the adventure of a young boy with a strange destiny ...

So here is Suikoden, second of the name who seems to enter the place as a worthy heir to his ancestor in 97. Once again the adventures in which you will have to participate take place against a backdrop of war opposing different factions that treachery and lies do not. not suffocate to achieve their ends. In the midst of this gigantic conflict of interest: a young orphan, adopted by an old man and whose main concern is to review his hometown. Accompanied by his best friend Jowy he therefore leaves under the duress of an attack by the garrison where he lives to discover his origins in defiance of the greatest dangers. But behind this somewhat cutesy scenario, there is actually a much more epic fresco. The young boy is far from suspecting the journey that will be his return to Kyaro.

So it's RPG in the purest tradition of titles to which the Japanese have accustomed us with softs like the Final Fantasy series that awaits us with Suikoden 2. True to the first of the name, we accompany a young man in tribulations in isometric view punctuated by endless dialogues and turn-based combat. The main character enriches his team with a multitude of newcomers ready to help him in his quest with their powers or their strength. Your hero and his makeshift companions gain experience as they progress, increasing their magic points but also their capacities in terms of strength or resistance. To be very concrete, let's say that the Final addicts should not be too out of place.

Your character therefore asks only to learn new spells by means of runes and to increase his characteristics as varied as defense, technique or even luck. Everything turns out to be fairly uncomplicated and we find ourselves fairly quickly between the very intuitive controls and the status system which in the end remains much more affordable than a certain FF 7 and its subtle mixes of Materia. . The whole is therefore very pleasant and should not disgust the player with too much complexity. The difficulty is therefore progressive, as is the strength of the enemies encountered, ending up in turn-based battles mobilizing the Army of the League or the Imperial Army. The concept as well as the principle of play of Suikoden remain unchanged gifts and one will even find characters of the first episode such as Victor or Flik.

In terms of getting started everything is therefore for the best in the best of all possible worlds unlike your hero and the army that he will have to train to support his camp. The gameplay offered by this title is therefore simply excellent combining various and varied movements with the harshness of the fights which in the end allow us to progress in the discovery of the mysterious legend of the 108 stars. Shadow of this idyllic picture: the endless dialogues which rage as soon as one approaches a character and which is not limited to being long are also often nonsense to make fade. However, it seems to be much more of a genre in itself that should be blamed than this game itself. In terms of graphics, without aligning with its little 3D comrades, Suikoden 2 benefits from a very good production that will delight fans of the first episode by continuing to maintain the outdated charm of simplistic characters and sets in isometric view. The whole is very homogeneous even if it becomes precisely repetitive in certain respects. The soundtrack is very neat, offering varied musical themes extending the friendly atmosphere that sets up with this title. In summary Suikoden 2 wonderfully prolongs the quality of its predecessor by immersing ourselves in what can be akin to a full-fledged sequel since many points left unanswered find an answer. Lovers of the first of the name should therefore find their account. The impeccable achievement and the important scale of your hero's quest should also ensure a good life in your small hands. In the end, a very good RPG in the purest Japanese tradition for fans of this very special genre ...

The notes
Graphics 15/20
Very good graphics that manage to prove to us that the use of 3D is not an essential factor for the realization of a good title.

Gameplay 15/20
An excellent game play that should save us from the boredom in which we quickly plunge the dialogues.

Lifespan 15/20
A longevity that should be more than honorable given the task that awaits you in Suikoden 2.

Soundtrack 14/20
Music fully in the spirit of this title, bringing good diversity while extending its atmosphere.

Scenario 15/20
Despite the somewhat slow start-up, the scenario has many surprises in store and ensures a good deal of interest in this title.

Suikoden 2 is therefore a very good Japanese-style RPG combining all the ingredients that make this category a success, without having the catch of a Final Fantasy VII.
