silent hill game review

silent hill game review

The little village of Silent Hill was no more than a ghost town isolated from everything. Death lurked around and took many horrible forms. If only this thick fog could disappear, I would find Cheryl faster and ... My radio began to sizzle in a way that I was starting to know only too well. My pistol clicked and I waited patiently in the mist, ear strained.

Silent Hill is the new Konami game. Our Japanese friends embark on the fantastic adventure. Let us not hide that they walk briskly on the feet of Capcom and its famous series Resident Evil. Konami has put the package into its advertising campaign and its software to make us forget its plagiarism. Let's move on to dissection ... It all begins when Harry Mason arrives in the small town of Silent Hill aboard his 4x4 and in the company of his only and adored daughter: Cheryl. In the middle of the night, an accident ends the family trip. Harry wakes up in his car, Cheryl has disappeared and a strange layer of fog covers the village; a village completely infested with emaciated creatures and eager for fresh flesh.

You will have at your disposal weapons and equipment in order to have a small chance in the nightmare that has become Silent Hill. We find the Resident Evil spirit with a pistol, a shotgun etc. Each weapon has appropriate ammunition that you will find here and there. A flashlight, care and various objects are also present. The inventory strangely resembles that of Resident and the regulars will be immediately at ease. Harry also has the same movements as Leon or Claire: walk, run, cheek etc. Where Resident Evil 2 plays 3D characters in precalculated and therefore fixed sets, SH immediately stands out by making 3D characters evolve in 3D sets. We are actually closer to a Tomb Raider. Indeed, the cameras are dynamic and follow you according to the action. Some shots are fixed while others move like in a movie for indeed guaranteed! Again, the whole 3D range is out: rain, snow, dynamic lights. In short, the total and it's really well done. The sets wherever you walk have two essential characteristics due to scriptwriting and technical constraints. Either you are in broad daylight and the city is covered in thick fog or it is the darkest night. In any case, you will only see a few meters in front of you. This saves the engine from having to manage distant scenery (there is none!) And at the same time, it gives an oppressive impression reflecting the atmosphere of the game. of the hero, but we don't see him any more quickly.

The game has a scenario worthy of a film with twists and turns and many puzzles of the Resident Evil type. Even if at the beginning, quite realistic, quickly the game makes us plunge into a monstrous universe at will with unhealthy corpses in all corners. Resident Evil startled us by making zombies appear around each corridor. Silent Hill can't for a simple reason. Due to the little vision you have, you have throughout the game a radio that sizzles and rings as soon as you are in the presence of a monster. It's very practical because the element of surprise is no longer the same. Indeed, it must have happened to you to be killed in Resident Evil because of a monster which was in fact hidden by the decorations in 2D. It's funny at first and after that annoys. Silent Hill is scary thanks to its atmosphere and its script. In addition, you sometimes know that there is a monster but you do not see it ... In the dark, it is quite frightening. Silent Hill is crammed with small graphic or playful details that bring you to even more realism. For example, if you have a dual shock controller, you will feel your heart beat in the controller more and more slowly depending on your injuries. Practical and fun. When you die, a play assistant in connection with your death will advise you. Or, when you run, Harry will feel tired and gasp when you stop.

High quality cinematic scenes punctuate the big chapters and small scenes in the game accompany the scenario to increase the fantastic and scary effect. The sound environment also contributes to the atmosphere. Few music except at key moments in the game, which leaves a lot of room for the sounds of the creatures and your character. Finally, Silent Hill is a clone of Resident Evil by its fantastic scenario and its characteristics of play. This is far from being a criticism because it respects all the rules and never fails. Where Silent Hill is stronger is that it corrects all the problems due to the 2D / 3D mixture of Resident by proposing a 3D engine of good quality while adding new interesting options. An exciting scenario, thrills and more important fun than Resident Evil. A great game!

The notes
Graphics 18/20
The engine runs very cleanly with well-managed 3D effects. The improbable movements go unnoticed as the game is horribly pretty. The rooms are creepy and scary, disgusting monsters. In short, a graphic aspect that succeeds in its objective, enclosing you in a world of horror.

Gameplay 19/20
The keys look like Resident Evil and whoever knows will be in conquered territory. The same movements or positions are available. Being able to look around increases the gameplay when it comes to shooting the monster. The camera angles are studied according to the rooms to give you maximum visibility without ever interfering. Cared for.

Lifespan 14/20
This may be the only flaw in the game. Indeed, monsters are very easy to kill and you take the plunge quickly. The puzzles, although quite complex, are oriented so as not to take too long to solve. Backups to fixed points fail to make the game more difficult. Fortunately, the game has several endings and anyway, what a spectacle!

Soundtrack 16/20
Music that respects the action without drowning it. The noises are well rendered: doors, monsters, weapons. The music is only there at certain moments of the game. It is weak but it serves the game and its atmosphere so ...

Scenario 18/20
A complete scenario. The riddles follow one another in the course of a complex main plot. The mystery remains intact for a long time and multiple endings are available. We just regret a little soft English voices during the dialogues.

Silent Hill seems to be playing in the same courtyard as Resident Evil but on closer inspection, it differs a lot by its full 3D. An aspect that fills the gaps in ROE while bringing new options. In short, it is really a very good game because it takes the best of Resident Evil while rectifying its faults. A flawless one.
