Rayman Legends

That's it ! Rayman Legends arrives on PS4. The Ubisoft Montpellier developers have taken advantage of these few months that separate the old gen and next gen versions to refine and enrich their baby somewhat. The result is slightly finer and more detailed textures, almost non-existent loading times and an original Assassin's Creed costume.

The crossing of dreams is in danger. The nightmares of Rayman and his friends have spawned evil creatures. It is therefore up to you, reader, to get our hero out of his deep sleep in order to fight against this terrible threat. For this, you will have to travel through the different worlds, each illustrating a separate legend (the Mexican Day of the Dead, 20,000 leagues under the sea ...), collect Lums and free Ptizetres. The opportunity for you to appreciate (and the word is weak) the improvements made to the engine, the gameplay and the level design of the game.

A WONDERFUL ENGINE AND ENRICHED LEVEL DESIGN

The first thing that strikes you when you start Rayman Legends is the special care given to the universe and the soundscape. Origins set the bar very high in terms of graphics and soundtrack, this second opus pushes the limits even further. Whether in terms of textures, lights or animations, this episode is a feast for the eyes. The music is always as captivating and fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the game. Everything is there to give you an immersive experience and give you maximum pleasure. A pleasure that will follow you on more than 120 tables (divided into five worlds, one of which is a secret), each more impressive than the last. Let us salute the work provided by the developers on the level design, even richer and sharper than that of Rayman Origins.

In addition to the levels of “classic” platforms, in which you will have to save a dozen Ptizetres (two are hidden in the secret zones) while taking care to collect Lums, you will have the opportunity to embark on real races -pursuits, to challenge bosses, to help princesses in special chapters or to jump and strike in rhythm in musical courses. Big news in this section, they use your sense of coordination, against a background of known music (Eye of the tiger, for example). Let's not forget either the "overgrown" levels, which appear as you progress. The principle is simple, you must save 3 Ptizet in less than 60 seconds (the faster you are, the more you will save Ptizet). Obviously, creatures and traps will complicate your task. Note that at the end of each of these phases, you can publish your time to hope to appear in the world ranking. What delight lovers of competition.

Each level and, a fortiori, each world, is unlocked as you release Ptizet (there are 700 in all). The number of Lums you collect is also of some importance since it allows you to get new characters and especially to receive scratch tickets. These give right to various rewards: additional Lums, Ptizetres, creatures (which produce other Lums daily), etc. This progression mechanism has certainly proven itself, but nevertheless ends up feeling a little warm. Certain players are thus likely to feel an impression of deja-vu, especially since the structure of each world is identical: classic levels, chase, boss and finally musical level. That said, nothing prevents you from browsing the levels in the order you want. Scratch tickets also give access to the “Back to Origins” table: the 40 best levels of the first game have been updated and integrated into Rayman Legends. Those who have not played Origins will be happy to discover its quintessence, the others will be able to immerse themselves in it to make the pleasure last.

MURPHY, IT'S YOU

Certain platform phases require the assistance of another character, Murphy. Controlled by the AI, it moves automatically to the key points, then you can press the appropriate key at the right time to execute the desired action and continue your progress in the level: moving or lowering a platform, activation of a switch, etc. If these passages bring a little variety to the adventure, it is clear that they are sometimes poorly integrated and artificially slow your progress. Indeed, it is not always easy to keep an eye on both the character and Murphy and to move the hero while interacting with the elements of the decor. For many, the experience can quickly turn into a disaster, especially if you do not first determine the person who takes care of Murphy. Some will see it as a form of challenge and will enjoy it, others may be a little chilled. Nothing really unacceptable, however.

AND IN ADDITION, THERE IS ONLINE!

In addition to offering us a local adventure of exemplary quality, Rayman Legends has the luxury of integrating an online mode. This revolves around daily and weekly challenges, the objectives and difficulty of which vary constantly. At the time of writing, we were able to participate in a challenge of collecting 150 Lums in the shortest possible time. Again, it will be necessary to show dexterity and memory to remember their location and harvest the most relevant. Very friendly and hyper addictive, the Challenge mode brings a very welcome scoring and competitive aspect. Kung Foot also promises long and numerous sessions with friends. Even if a few hours are enough to complete the five worlds, it will take much more to access the secret chapter and to unlock everything. In short, let's not go by four ways: Rayman Legends is a masterpiece not to be missed under any circumstances.

The notes
+ Positive points
A graphic universe and a great soundscape
Exemplary gameplay ...
An extremely rich level design
Excellent lifespan: around ten hours are required to unlock worlds and levels, not to mention online challenge mode
The really delusional Kung Foot mode for many

-Negative points
The somewhat repetitive structure of the worlds
... even if the phases with Murphy are sometimes wobbly

Rayman Legends is the worthy successor to Origins. More beautiful, richer, it displays a solid and effective gameplay, even if the phases with Murphy are sometimes poorly integrated and can put off some players. An unforgettable experience, to live alone or with others. Unless you are completely refractory to the Rayman universe, you can buy this video game masterpiece with your eyes closed, especially if you did not fall for the PS3 version.
