Perfect Dark

Goldeneye addicts will finally be able to say goodbye to the best quake-like of the N64 and welcome as it should the brand new bomb from Rare Software: Perfect Dark.

3 years after what remains as the only Quake-Like valid on the Nintendo console, the little English of Rare Software are killing their own myth by offering us a new jewel. Using their 3D engine in subjective view, Rare has once again managed to improve all aspects of the game including multiplayer and further enhance the capabilities of, say, the now aging Nintendo 64. Here is a small summary of the last exploits of the terrible children of the N64, I named Rare Software.

In Perfect Dark, you will play the role of Joanna Dark aka Perfect Dark, a young 23 year old spy, member of the elite forces of the Carrington Institute. In the scenario, everything begins with the call for help from a scientist from the DataDyne Corporation. Going there during a routine mission, our young heroine will realize that the multinational has very shady activities. As the adventure progresses, Perfect Dark will sink into the meanders of the corporation, discovering projects on a global scale and endangering the President of the United States during a dark extra conspiracy - terrestrial ... Okay, I won't say more :)

For solo mode, you will simply follow the framework of the game, in a series of missions with multiple objectives. If the beginning starts slowly, you will quickly find yourself in very hot missions with certain parts of mission to be carried out in precise times, without counting the number of enemies which will go increasing. The problems of the First Person Shooter usually are more often due to the control interface than to the game itself, the controllers do not always adapt in the best way to this type of view. On this, a very good job has been brought on the one hand in the controls which are as lively as intelligent but also thanks to the semi automation of a lot of functions. Automation in the shots first but also in the centering of the view, little more appreciable when the precision of a joystick is lacking. Depending on the different configurations available, you will also have the means to perform the classic movements of any self-respecting Quake-Like: move forward, run, stoop, strap and if the lack of the jump is still painful, you will for example option to take a quick look around a corridor. Perfectly integrated and quickly mastered, the controls of Perfect Dark will not disorient Goldeneye aficionados. In addition to that, Rare has understood that weapons and objects form an important part of quake-like and there will be several dozen weapons and gadgets available to you. Each weapon always having several types, the gameplay is enriched especially that the gadgets like the mini camera that you can deploy to inspect the levels will also be there.

From a Gameplay point of view, we still find all the essence of Rare games. Dominating the support perfectly, they are then able to attach themselves directly to the universe or even the atmosphere. Atmosphere that will translate into real music, changing according to the degree of danger during the missions and truly creating a special atmosphere. Atmosphere also in the realization which is realistic and which we feel that nothing has been done lightly. Artificial intelligence has also been heavily worked to give a real challenge in the game rather than just providing you with lots of targets to knock out. Especially notable in multiplayer, enemies have several possibilities to plant a ball between your two pretty doe eyes. First of all, they benefit from rich animations and therefore from appropriate movements: they jump, arise, roll, making them difficult to surprise but also to aim. On the other hand, they are themselves capable of fairly advanced pseudo-intelligence, giving them random and thoughtful reactions like hiding or calling for reinforcements. Depending on the difficulty mode you choose, you will also have real surprises as to the intelligence of the enemies or even the intrinsic difficulty of the missions. In short, Perfect Dark, you will understand what the words realistic difficulty mean ...

The technique ... Ah the technique! This is another point where the developers have worked miracles. Mainly using the Expansion Pack, the game being particularly burdened without its presence, the game manages to make technical prowess. The levels are splendid, well designed and one has the impression that all the parts of the decorations shine or use light effects. Reflections, smoke, magnificent explosions, the game is full of small visual details perfectly made. The engine derived from that of Goldeneye is even more fluid with always more elements on the screen. The environment changes are also very varied, avoiding to tire the player. In summary, the engine of Perfect Dark is the best ever made to date and it is still Rare who wins this palm hands down. Far from bacler, each visual element is a real happiness.

Multiplayer was also not sloppy. The sum of modifiable parameters is very innovative while you can customize your multiplayer games at will. With modes like deathmatch, cooperation, team match or even counter operation, you will only know how to choose. Playable up to 12 with 4 human players and 8 bots also configurable, the deathmatches on the twenty arenas available make the multiplayer part of Goldeneye completely obsolete. A new technical feat from Rareware that never ceases to amaze us.

The notes
Graphics 19/20
A redesigned 3D engine that offers luxury details in a profusion of fluidity and visual effects. The technical quality is undeniable.

Gameplay 17/20
Controls always as optimized for the joysticks and which will require only a minimum of adaptation for a lot of pleasure.

Lifespan 17/20
A single player mode that will require a lot of patience in high difficulties and an exceptional multiplayer game in its design.

Soundtrack 18/20
Breathtaking music and voice in English during the dialogues, the soundscape sticks to you and never lets go.

Scenario 17/20
A little cliché, it does not prevent the scenario bounces a lot and that the atmosphere imprinted by Rare could not be more realistic.

Rare draw once again to nail you to your N64. A Goldeneye enriched on all its points and which is placed like the best Quake-like of the moment on the support!
