double dragon game review

double dragon game review

The basics are good here, the fun may not be yet ...

Arcade version
Double Dragon has the merit of making us realize that the beat'em all 2D has evolved very well, that before Streets of Rage and Golden Ax, the genre was built in 1987 on solid foundations.

Today, Double Dragon does not seem to me to be very fun to play like a good old SoR2, it is rather slow, imprecise, unwieldy ...
However, the elements are already in place: We can move in all directions, kick, punch, jump, jump, kick, kick (double press before), kick foot jumped back, nudge back, base pitcher with knee kick or projection, in short that's about it but it's quite rich. One can even use the elements of the decoration like cans of gasoline or rocks to throw them on his enemies. The weapons are also already present, a classic baseball bat, the whip (mmmh) and the knife!

Four missions, quite varied but not great sets, boring bosses, half an hour to reach the end. Double Dragon does not yet have the depth of a Final Fight or a Streets of Rage, for sure, however, it is a bit like a dad for them. They owe him a lot, so respect.

Regarding the different versions of Technos BTA, I rubbed the Megadrive version first, came out in 1992, and which is a true copy of the Arcade version, but devoid of all the horrible slowdowns of the latter , as soon as there are more than three characters on the screen. I was also very surprised to see how penalizing it was for this Arcade version which I thought was superior to that of the Megadrive. However, apart from the more punchy sound effects, this is definitely not the case, but after all it's quite normal, still happy that the problems of clipping and slowdowns could be solved on the Sega console, since five years of technical evolution separate them!
Then I tested the NES version, released in 1988, a year later than the original, very different graphically from its sisters (8 bits required), it is doing admirably well, apart from the disappearance of a few moves (obviously, two buttons against three, it reduces the possibilities), and even shows itself can be more fun and strangely enjoyable to play. With its differently constructed levels, adapting to the more restricted gameplay than on the Arcade, including in addition an "arena" mode with a small gallery of characters to select, it is undoubtedly a very good version, made with care for the little NES.

Well, I think I have toured this legendary video game that is Double Dragon, even if I certainly still have a lot to discover about it. I imagine that with two players in cooperation, it must remain relatively fun, and for all those who discovered it in an arcade in their youth, I imagine the shock!
