Advance Wars game review
The GBA is once again welcoming a veritable little bomb into its ranks. Straight out of Nintendo studios, Advance Wars is a very complete but also very accessible strategy game. It's the war ! The Blues invade the territory of the Greens, themselves in conflict with the Oranges, while the Yellow turn their thumbs while watching the show! Didn't you understand anything? It's normal. Anyway, the only thing to remember is that the world today is divided between four clans who can not help but get their heads full. Advance Wars invites you to take part in this conflict by entrusting you with the reins of the Orange army. Battles all take place on maps of varying sizes and on which you move your troops. Each unit can move a number of specific boxes which depends on its function (infantry, tank, plane ...), the weather and the terrain.
Traveling in the mountains is naturally slower than traveling in the plains, so your soldiers will progress painfully under the snow. Each also has its own fighting rules. While the infantrymen must necessarily come into contact with their enemies, the missile launchers can afford to stay several squares apart to knock out their targets. The power relationships between the 18 units are quite complex but remain very simple to understand, because they call for a lot of logic (bombers are more powerful than tanks, surface-to-air missiles are more powerful than bombers. .). The outcome of the fights depends both on the forces involved, on the player who has the initiative (the one who launches the assault) but also on the terrain. The soldiers posted in the mountains will have a better defense and will have more precise shots.
The visibility of soldiers is also important (at least when you are playing in fog mode) and you will only be able to detect enemies if they are close enough to you. And that's not all, Nintendo has gone even further. Even if your soldiers can see a forest, you must still send someone to verify that no enemy is hiding there. In addition, a soldier who climbs to the top of a mountain will be able to enjoy a much broader view of the map. Boats, submarines, tanks, bombers, fighter planes, helicopters, missile launchers, infantrymen ... the list of units is very long. Not all of them have direct combat skills and some will only be used to transport the rest of the troops more quickly or to supply them with ammunition and gasoline. By capturing cities on the map, you will earn pennies which will replenish your coffers and which will allow the construction of new units in advanced missions.
Finally, each clan has a special power that it can trigger once its CO gauge is filled. The Blues are for example able to start a snowstorm while the Oranges have the means to repair their units more quickly. Advance Wars overflows with small details of all kinds but do not panic, a long tutorial of fifteen missions allows you to smoothly assimilate the many possibilities of the title. Impeccable on the interest of play, Advance Wars is practically also on its realization. With its magnificent graphics in a very childish style, the universe adopts a very pleasant manga look. The characters may lack a bit of charisma, especially Olaf, the leader of the Blues, who looks more like an old sea bass than a great military commander. The soundtrack is very pleasant, even if it turns out to be very repetitive when the battles last a little too long.
I saved the best for last: the incredible lifetime of the title. With more than 130 maps and an editor to create your own battlegrounds, Advance Wars has a rock-solid longevity. And that's not all, like many GBA games, Advance Wars can be enjoyed by many. In short, all alone or with four, with one or more cartridges, Advance Wars is a real treat that you should not let pass. Probably one of the very best GBA titles to date.
The notes
Graphics 15/20
Colorful graphics in a manga style that makes the action easier to read. The battles are filled with humor as well as the expressions of the characters during the dialogues.
Gameplay 18/20
The rules of the game are well explained thanks to the excellent tutorial. You quickly grasp the function of each unit, which allows you to quickly build attack strategies.
Lifespan 19/20
Missions to resell and multi-player modes very complete. Add to that a map editor. Advance Wars is truly flawless in terms of longevity.
Soundtrack 14/20
The music is slightly weary by dint of hearing it. The sound effects are very good.
Scenario 15/20
The starting scenario pits the Oranges against the Blues but soon, other factions come into play.
By mixing a simple and intuitive interface with a rich and complete gameplay, Nintendo achieves a master stroke with Advance Wars. All strategy lovers will throw themselves on this game with undeniable qualities, the others also for that matter!
