Super Meat Boy game
Super Meat BoyFollowing in the footsteps of masterpieces like Braid or Limbo, Super Meat Boy abandons the script depth of the two aforementioned titles to offer a somewhat different approach. Indeed, if the software also puts it on the platform, the whole is intended to be a vibrant tribute to games of the 80s and 90s, such as Rick Dangerous or Super Mario Bros with which he shares the initials. Suddenly, the reflection will give way to ninja reflexes, the player constantly navigating between frustration, nervousness and relief at each end of level. Yes, Super Meat Boy will not leave you unscathed ... And your controller even less.
In video games, there are two main categories of titles: those designed for the general public who keep taking the player by the hand and their opposites preferring to offer us a challenge worthy of the name. Super Meat Boy clearly belongs to the second category and in this way refers to many titles from the 80s, 90s to which the game offers many tributes. In this case, we will obviously think of Rick Dangerous, venerable game of platforms having passed on to us during two episodes moments of intense joy but also of unsuspected distress. Super Meat Boy should also give you similar sensations. Indeed, if the concept of the game refers to any Mario by asking us to save our beautiful, who will also narrowly escape us at the end of each level, the way of doing things is much more perverse. However, we are still faced with a set of platforms divided into several chapters which are themselves subdivided. The whole does not waste time since in the space of a few levels, you will master the gameplay at your fingertips. That said, it is very simplistic with its button to run and its button to jump. You will not need more to chain the tests.
However, do not think it will be easy. Oh no, my good friends. Indeed, from the first half of Chapter 1, the levels will become more and more full-bodied and will require very many tests before seeing the end. In short, as soon as you have taken your first steps, you will have to calibrate your jumps to the nearest millimeter to reach this small piece of platform in the left corner. But if, all up there, between the circular saw and the giant blades! Knowingly abandoning the concept of limited life, you will then have as many tests as you wish to pass the tables. In fact, Team Meat preferred to bet on "hardcore-gaming" linked to very short levels and to finish as soon as possible to be at the top of the online ranking. Thus, in addition to the pride of being among the best, and that of being able to subdue the replays combining all your dead (sigh!) And your unique success, the player also benefits from a clever construction. Each chapter therefore includes 20 levels that you can follow in the order you want, the only restriction being to complete a minimum of 17 to face the boss at the end of the area. Despite this, you will have to hang on to the branches so as not to fall, since most courses will ask you to know them by heart AND to have a cheetah instinct to get you out.
However, as we specify above, this is by no means the gameplay which is simply perfect. Indeed, it will only be a question here of running and jumping, the two movements can be combined, in addition to a slide, to perform several jumps on the same wall or between two sections of wall like the Prince of Persian. Simple on paper, devilish in practice. Indeed, you will have to constantly manage the pressure on the jump button, the push allowing you to reach three distinct heights. And as you can imagine, the developers did not hesitate to multiply the passages that the Marquis de Sade would not have denied. Cut, flattened, impaled, the dead will not fail but despite everything, impossible to win. Paradoxical? Yes and no because beyond the necessary concentration, we will feel enormous pride in having accomplished certain works worthy of those of Hercules. And as if that were not enough, it will be possible to collect hundreds of dressings scattered everywhere for the chance to play other characters. Needless to say, it won't take more to jump on this little gem, elitist in terms of success but ultimately so rewarding!
The notes
Graphics 14/20
Super Meat Boy is one of those games opting for a closely shaved or even minimalist design. We may like it or not, but the interest of such graphics comes from the fact that we very easily analyze the traps that we have to face. We can also find in this visual a certain Castle Crashers influence evoking at times flash games. Logical since SMB comes from this environment. Anyway, the 8 chapters offer different themes but above all more austere.
Gameplay 18/20
The game is difficult, very difficult, and legitimizes by itself the genre "die and retry". However, the gameplay is perfectly oiled and millimeter. Requiring only two buttons, the set highlights the race and the jumps. As much as the other element is not a problem, but you will have to perfectly master the management of said jumps, the latter taking into account the pressure on the associated key.
Lifespan 17/20
Several hundred levels will give you lots of cold sweats, nervousness but also satisfaction. Then, all that remains is to have an A + grade for each chapter in order to unlock its equivalent in the Dark World. Note that by recovering all the dressings scattered throughout the game, you will be able to embody 11 other characters, with their own characteristics, from several other games, some of which were mentioned in this test. Which ? It's up to you to find out! Finally, icing on the cake, it will be possible to enjoy a little later other levels in the form of DLC ... Free. Amazing isn't it ?!
Soundtrack 14/20
The sound effects are directly linked to the nature of the hero and throw us disgusting "splashes" over time when our pack of bidoche lands on the ground. The music, they can annoy even if they sing in a rather delicious way very 80s compositions.
Scenario/
Super Meat Girl + kidnapping by Dr Fetus + Super Meat Boy in valiant knight = Mario Bros. scenario oriented trash attitude. That's all folk.
Super Meat Boy is a bit of the story of Happy Tree Friends who meets the venerable Rick Dangerous. A true love / hate relationship driven by an extraordinary difficulty and a very frustrating concept of "die and retry". However, thanks to its playability with little onions, its offbeat humor, its gargantuan lifespan and this inexorable desire pushing us to continue to appreciate the delusions of Team Meat, the software is right on target. If you like the genre, you have a lot of self-control and a big budget "joysticks", you can try the experience without any problem. Without being as definitive as a Limbo or a Braid, Super Meat Boy militates for the return to the game of hardcore platforms but to the most rewarding victories. Paradoxically, we will hate it and we will love it for that, but in the end, we will not stop coming back to it again and again.
