left 4 dead game review
So like that, you ended up getting tired of FPS where everyone leaves on his own without worrying about his team? Tired of facing death all alone in your corner, abandoned by your peers and rejected by your brothers in arms? You can no longer get knocked in the back by an "ally" who only wants to steal your beautiful hard-won sniper rifle? Do you want to finally enjoy a title where the survival of all comes only through mutual aid, self-giving and brotherly love? So maybe you should take a look at Left 4 Dead, a game that only exists by and for cooperation. A game that does spots, but does them well.If for most of you it is probably not necessary to present Left 4 Dead, some young souls still innocent may need to be perfumed. Also, forgive us, but we will start with a small general presentation of the beast. Left 4 Dead was actually born from a desire to promote the game in cooperation. For once, we will not try to accumulate more frags than the others, but we will rather try to play for his teammates, three other guys, real stereotypes on legs, who like you, find themselves stuck in the middle of an invasion zombies. And the zombies in question are not the kind to wait nicely to get plumbed, like the ones that good old George Romero likes to show us. No, these meat bags are more like horrible predators, able to sprint like athletes to jump your throat. That's basically, everything you need to know about an app that does not bother with a scenario. Indeed, we will never know where the zombies come from and we will have no other goal than to reach the exit of each level. All the fun of the game comes simply from these bloody confrontations, from these trips to obscure buildings where each corridor makes its hordes of bloody critters rain.
Let's continue with a little warning. Given the nature of the game, know that you will have absolutely no interest in playing it solo with bots as teammates. Even if the latter are very effective, the experience will clearly not be as satisfactory as with colleagues of flesh and blood. Left 4 Dead is only really worth it by multiplayer, because that's where it really proves its fantastic effectiveness. We can therefore only advise you too much to invite 3 friends to join you to cross the 4 campaigns of the game, all segmented into 5 levels with progressive difficulty. In addition to the rise in power of each of these brief campaigns where we will find ourselves facing more and more traveling corpses, we will especially appreciate the wide variety of environments offered. All of them cheerfully draw from the zombie movies and offer us a fiddling with classic situations, but skillfully brought. From a city center in a state of war, you will find yourself crossing the metro, an abandoned hospital, a highway or an abandoned farm, in the middle of the street. We will have to regularly organize ourselves to face endless hordes of critters, waiting for an elevator to go down to your floor or for reinforcements to deign to get you out of hell.
Surviving in this brutal world is based more on your ability to support your friends than to blast properly. Allied fire cannot be disabled and forces players to be wary when using their weapons and especially their grenades. Because if we mainly use pistols, shotguns, machine guns and sniper rifles, we will also come across nice Molotov cocktails and "bait" grenades which attract all the zombies in the area before exploding. Used at the right time, explosives can be decisive and greatly facilitate your progress. But if despite everything your arsenal, one of your colleagues ends up biting the dust, then you will have a few seconds to put it back on its feet. And there, as much to say to you that it will be necessary to hold on. Surrounded, you will have to make sure to effectively protect the victim and the player who will be responsible for resuscitating him. With half the team busy, you quickly feel helpless.
Same fight for the use of care kits (each player can only take one), which immobilizes you for a few long seconds. If you are in good shape, nothing prevents you from using your precious kit to treat a colleague, hoping that he will protect your loaves afterwards. To facilitate location and progression, be aware that your allies will always appear to you in the form of bright figures, even if they are in another room, 50 meters away. Left 4 Dead does absolutely everything to force players to assist each other. This also involves special zombies, stronger or more sadistic than the others and which will therefore have to be faced together. We think in particular of Smokers, capable of grabbing a human at 15 meters with their tongue. The unfortunate victim of this furious lick can no longer count on her friends to get away. Equally fun: Boomers, capable of vomiting on a survivor. The juice thus spread will make the target blind for fifteen seconds and will also attract all the zombies in the area. Again, it will be necessary to stick together to protect the weakened player while he undergoes the assaults of the horde. We also think of the Hunters, whose specialty is to jump on their target to overthrow and lacerate it. But the real terrors of Left 4 Dead are undoubtedly the Tanks and the Witch. The Tanks are particularly large, powerful and resistant. A tank mandala will soon ring you and send you flying 20 yards away. Nice when the fight takes place on the roof of a shack. Finally, the Witches will leave you alone if you don't shoot them and turn off your lights. If you are too careless, you will end up with a hell of a problem on your back.
The presence of these friendly critters will always be indicated to you by an audible alert and by comments from your allies, skillfully integrated into the soundtrack. In the same vein, we will always know when a friend is recharging, since he will never fail to yell. A detail that may seem trivial but which turns out to be essential, especially when you have to defend a specific area. And if you think you can easily overcome your enemies by accumulating automatisms as in other shooters, think again. The great strength of Left 4 Dead is its ability to renew itself. If the structure of each level will obviously remain the same in all your games, the density of enemies, their spawn zones and the position of objects will not always be the same. An undeniable plus, especially when you realize that each campaign only ends in around fifty minutes. That said, to change a little, nothing will prevent you from turning your jacket over to pass in the camp of the stiffs thanks to the Versus mode. Playable by eight, this mode offers you to alternately embody survivors and zombies. As usual, the living will only care about reaching the exit. The dead, on the other hand, will have to do everything to block them.
In the cracked skin of one of the famous zombies described above (except Witch, absent from the casting in Versus mode), you will have to use your powers to eviscerate the enemy. Rest assured all the same, you will not only be 4 to oppose the survivors because all the zombies of the campaign will always be there to assist you. And even if your character succumbs, you can reappear a few seconds later. Much more difficult to control than humans due to their great fragility, monsters nevertheless benefit from a major advantage: the position of their allies AND of their enemies is constantly indicated to them. An aspect that guarantees intense games without dead time. Finally, if fighting in the skin of a dead man has nothing to do with the way humans play, then again, the key to success will lie in coordinated attacks. In short, whatever approach is taken, Left 4 Dead presents itself as an extremely fun and catchy title. We regret however that the levels are not more numerous, that it is impossible to choose directly its server and that the Versus mode is only active on 2 of the 4 campaigns, but overall, the experience is so fascinating that 'It would be a shame to miss it.
The notes
Graphics 14/20
The Source Engine of Half-Life 2 is frankly starting to show its age. The textures lack finesse, but the management of the lights, even if it is not frankly exceptional, shows enough control to offer the game an excellent horror film atmosphere. We will also appreciate the different environments that seem straight from these famous feature films filled with zombies that we all love.
Gameplay 17/20
Lots of sensations in this game which puts cooperation at the heart of its gameplay. Everything is done to invite players to act together, whether they embody the survivors or whether they choose to donate in rotten flesh. In this sense, Left 4 Dead is an undeniable success.
Lifespan 11/20
Four very brief campaigns but which we will enjoy replaying many times, in particular thanks to a system which modifies the position of enemies and objects at each game. As it stands, however, the game seems a bit sparse in terms of content. But we imagine that Valve will be able to feed her baby in the coming months.
Soundtrack 17/20
High quality sound effects and voluntarily kitsch replicas constitute the background of Left 4 Dead. Horror movie lovers will certainly find their way there.
Scenario/
A captivating atmosphere, intelligent gameplay and intense sensations make Left 4 Dead a real success. The title ensures that players can have fun online without worrying too much. Because basically, even if the survival of a group depends on its unity and coordination, it will still be difficult to criticize a player who, carried away in a destructive madness, separates from his team and puts everyone in danger . This is finally what gives all its interest to Left 4 Dead, this interactive zombie movie that we will probably have a lot of trouble releasing in the coming months.
